The Fireplace restaurant in Brookline’s Washington Square is officially closing its doors at the end of the year, chef-owner Jim Solomon announced today — and the first Boston-area location of New Haven’s Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria is moving in.
But fans of The Fireplace will still be able to order food and drink through the business’s catering operation, The Fireplace Catering, which will continue full time.
Solomon, who was born in New Haven, told the Globe he’s delighted that the pizzeria is coming to town. “I took my wife there when she was just my girlfriend,” he laughed. He said in an email newsletter to his subscribers that he was approached by Pepe’s “at just the right moment” to buy his restaurant.

His catering business — which does not yet have an address — will focus on classic American recipes and Colonial-era cocktails.
“It has been 13 great years and the support from this community has been outstanding, as has been the loyalty and dedication of our staff,” Solomon said in a press release. “Our catering business has been growing steadily and it gives us the ability to take the best we have to offer at our restaurant and bring that to diverse audiences across the region.”
The Fireplace will seat customers through Dec. 31.
