ABOUT

Women in Philanthropy networking event with speaker / topic on the turnaround of Rape Crisis.

In 2012 a perfect storm of financial issues had Rape Crisis on the brink of shutting its doors. A series of connections lead Kathleen Dey to Laurence Beder, a senior lecturer in marketing and management at the Wits Business School. Laurence had a plan, and it revolved around the weaving together of business and marketing principles into the existing NGO culture of the organisation and taking the best of both worlds into a strategy for moving forward. This is the story of how the organisation gritted its teeth, made some hard and unusual decisions, and survived. Successes have included growing individual giving to the organisation from R172 000 in 2012 to over R1.6 million in 2013, among other startling changes.
