Longueuil resident on AH5017 crash: ‘There’s a lot of anguish’

LONGUEUIL – Montarville is a quiet street in this South Shore suburb of Montreal, but it has been the focal point of heavy emotions over the past 24 hours, as a French drone reportedly located the wreckage of an Air Algerie flight that disappeared shortly after departing Burkina Faso.

“There’s a lot of anguish” [in this neighbourhood]” said a woman who lived in the same building as Angelique and Winmalo Somda, two Quebecers lost in the crash.

The husband and wife were reportedly on board Flight AH5017 en route to Algiers after visiting family with their two children.

Also on the plane was Winmalo’s brother Wilfried Somda.

His pregnant wife had stayed home in Longueuil.

She declined an interview with Global News.

Some 116 people were aboard the flight when it disappeared Thursday morning.

All Canadians on board were Quebec residents of Quebec; the crash affected three Quebec families.

“I don’t know what I will do tomorrow,” said Mamadou Zoungrana, a Gatineau man who says he lost his wife and two children in the disaster.

“Everyone is gone. We were together for 17 years. They’re gone without a trace.”

Sherbrooke resident Isabelle Prevost, a friend of the Somda family, was also on board the flight.

It was the first time she ever flew. She was the mother of three children.
