Donald Trump has opened the floodgates to the lies about immigration.
Lie No. 1: Immigrants take away American jobs. Truth: Immigrants add to the economic demand by using their paychecks to buy automobiles, homes, fuel, food, clothing and everything else a person needs to live and pay taxes and Social Security for our retirees.
Lie No. 2: They’re taking jobs away from working Americans. Truth: We have a shortage of unskilled workers in this country because the Baby Boomers are retiring by the millions. Tw enty five years ago, each retiree in America was matched by five workers. Now, for each retiree, there are only three workers. Without a sudden rise in the birth rate, we will not have enough workers to sustain our retiring population.
We will have to have more immigrants, so don’t listen to demagogues who want to blame the economic problems of the middle class and the poor on new immigrants. Scapegoating immigrants is shameful and just plain wrong. It should be clear by now to anyone paying attention that Donald Trump has long ago determined that the traditional concepts of true and false have no relevance to him.
So, to our immigrant friends and neighbors, if you are not a citizen, you must get to the courthouse and begin the citizenship process before Nov. 3. To all our immigrant friends and neighbors who are already citizens, please register to vote before the upcoming election Nov. 3. Then vote as if your life and livelihood depended on it, because it does.
