A proposed dress code policy at Garden Spot Middle School in New Holland that would have banned students from wearing shorts had people up in arms.

According to Lancaster Online, dozens of parents and students turned out for a town hall meeting Thursday evening to protest a policy for the new school year that would prevent students from wearing shorts.

Currently, the school follows the "fingertip rule," which dictates that anything shorter than a student's fingertips when their arms are at their sides is not allowed.

Garden Spot Middle School principal, Jeffery Starr, however, told CBS 21 that students can stand up taller, which makes the rule nebulous and hard to enforce.

Many parents at the meeting felt the "no shorts" rule unfairly punished good students and that there were additional issues with skirt and dress lengths.

By the end of the meeting a compromise was reached that amended policy to allow students to wear shorts that "extend to mid thigh."
