Calverton News: Kent Animal Shelter receives grant

What a great weekend. Despite the rain on July 4, which we needed, it was awesome! Local sweet corn is here, along with raspberries and blueberries. Lots of good stuff, with more to come.

As usual, PLECO has been doing a great job conquering the Peconic River’s ludwigia problem. This pesky weed, if not controlled, could clog the river. In June, members of PLECO and the Peconic Estuary Program pulled 2.5 cubic yards and another pull is in the works. If you’d like to participate in the next pull to help clean the Peconic River, call Julie at 444-0871. Also, thanks to Chart Guthrie for all his help and expertise.

Speaking of Chart, if you’d like to meet him then head on over to Hallockville Museum Farm’s annual barn dance, to be held July 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the historic Naugles Barn. Chart will once again call the steps and teach the dances and he’s awesome! For ticket info visit hallockville.com or email [email protected].

Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton has received an amazing grant from PetSmart Charities that will enable them to spay/neuter 1,500 feral/free-roaming cats and kittens. When brought in to the shelter these animals need to be in traps, which you can get at Kent. A deposit is required but is refundable when the trap is returned. Each cat will get their ear tipped and receive a free rabies shot. Appointments are required; call 727-7797. Congratulations to Kent, which does so much for both pets and people.

Belated happy birthday to former Manorville resident Kenny Smith, who now resides in North Carolina, on July 3. Love you tons, Kenny! Belated wishes are also sent to Rosie Hogan, my uncle Larry Taylor and Ray Pickersgill, who all celebrated on the 5th. I hope you all had a great, fun day!

Happy birthday to my buddy Gerry Meade, who will turn another year older on July 18, from Sue, Zack, Jamie and yours truly. Have a great day, Ger!

Catie Herbst, daughter of my neighbors Chris and Helen Herbst of Calverton, got married recently and is now Mrs. Greg Olkhonsky. They had a beautiful wedding, attended by lots of family and friends. My love to you both for a very wonderful life together.

Happy anniversary to Calverton residents Sandi and Frank Darrow, who celebrated July 8, from all your family and friends. Congratulations to you both.

Baiting Hollow Congregational Church will once again hold its annual chicken barbecue Aug. 2. The rain date is Aug. 3. Stay tuned for more info. Do plan to go; it’s awesome!

That is all for this week. Take care, be safe, and eat your local fruits and veggies. Bye.
