Finding Libbie Paperback – March 30, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
Poring over a dusty hatbox of photographs in her grandmother’s closet, Emily Prentice is shocked to discover her father was married and divorced before meeting her mother.
In the summer of 1968, Jack and Libbie fall in love under the spell of their small town, untouched by the chaos of the late sixties. Though Libbie’s well-to-do parents disapprove of Jack’s humble background, she marries Jack a year after they graduate high school. But soon their happiness crumbles as Libbie’s mental state unravels and she is drawn to alcohol and drugs. Despite his efforts, Jack loses the woman he loves and is forced to move on with his life.
Now that Emily’s mother has passed and Jack is alone again, Emily grows obsessed with the beautiful woman who’d given her father such joy. Determined to find Libbie, Emily pieces together the couple’s fragmented past. But is it too late for happy endings?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2016I will start by simply saying that I loved this beautiful, heartbreaking, poignant book. I became emotionally invested in the characters and their story from the very first page. Emily is helping her grandmother, Bev, pack her things for a move into a new home when she stumbles upon a hatbox filled with old photographs of her father, Jack, and a young woman named Libbie. Libbie was her father's first wife...a fact that is news to Emily, who didn't know until that moment that her father had been married before. Emily's grandmother reveals Jack's and Libbie's story to Emily...a story filled with love, but also filled with unimaginable heartache. The characters in this story are memorable and truly touched my heart; characters who were passionate and loving, flawed and heartbroken. This story kept me up at night, as I felt compelled to find out what happens to the people on the pages of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2017Finding Libby was a story that had so much meaning. Showing that just because you come from money, doesn't make up for love. Jack was a down to earth farm boy that was rich in so many ways. What he went through in this story went on a little too long. My heart was breaking for him. What was clear is Libby had emotional issues and a mother who loved her, but had more than just emotional issues. The power of addiction was shown strong in this book. As much love as there is sometimes. Addiction and mental illness can take a toll on a family. This story was done in a way that you could feel the pain. Watching what Libby had to go through with her mother and sister made me want to kidnap her from that family. No wonder she loved the farm and Jacks mom and dad so very much.
The one thing that confused me, is why Libby's dad changed the way he did. He went from being a soft spoken man and wanting Jack to take care of Libby, to a man that did an awful thing. I don't want to give it away so I'll just say, it didn't seem to fit the man he had been. Maybe he just knew that his daughter had too many problems to stay married. The truth is, I couldn't put the book down and stayed up past my bedtime to read it. The story pulled me in from the very beginning. I was so happy at the ending and how things unfolded. I loved Jack's daughter and I was glad she stuck to her guns regarding her own relationship. This is just a really good story with a cast of characters you will fall in love with. The end of the book had me in tears. I loved this story. It was not in any kind of box, that was for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2022I absolutely loved this book. I couldn't put it down. The characters were all so real to me. It was a shame that Drs during the 1970' s couldn't help Libbie with her issues. I felt so bad for her and for Jack. I loved how the story ended. The part where Jack goes to see Libbie at the assisted living home brought me to tears. Deanna Lynn Sletton is now my favorite author.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2023What a beautiful story! I laughed and cried. The words caught me and did not let go. The story was.perfect and again I was sad when the end of the story came.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2016I was a bit disappointed in with this book. It was reasonably well written but I found the actions and reactions of some of the characters unrealistic. The book is divided into three sections. The first section hooked me me with possibility of an interesting read. I don't want to be a spoiler for any readers but in the second section of the book I felt that the story dragged on. The reactions of the characters was rather flat. I was very surprised that the Jack rarely got angry. I know that the diagnosis of mental illness in the 1970's was not a straight forward exact art. However Jack was entirely too forgiving and was quite spineless in the situation. This section of the story really dragged on. The final section of the story gave several unrealistic scenarios.
In conclusion, I usually read something that will help sleep and for that purpose this was a great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2024Libbie and Jack found themselves in school and fell in love. Libbie lived a very torcherd life. But throughout the story, they loved each other. Unbearable circumstances forced life to separate them.
The book was finished in 2 days. Come and "Find Libbie". You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2017"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." This verse from St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians is what immediately came to mind as the closest association to this beautiful love story. Even after four decades since their bitter separation, Jack and Libbie found each other again. This story was a demonstration of love between a man and a woman, between friends, among family members. Sadly, it also showed that what may be thought of as familial love was actually not. Not that there was any cruel intention, but what was construed as love through protection, really was debilitating and suffocating. We have to be careful how we love, in my opinion. If it does not bear, believe, hope and endure, it most likely is something else.
Simply written, but with much emotion, this is a book to savor; one which you will read slowly to stretch the hours. It breaks and warms the heart at the same time; just like true love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and researched
As an advocate for mental health, when I pick up a book where one of the lead characters has a mental illness, I get nervous if there's going to be cardboard characters and promote stigma. This is the best book I've read that accurately portrays undiagnosed bipolar and how it effects her life. I'm not giving any more of the plot or the climax. But I will say it's a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW 💖
This book was about two young people Jack and Libbie who fell Iin love at a very young age and got married, and the struggles they face as Libbie is from a wealthy family and Jack isn't, I adored Jack and his family and I found Libbies family to be cold and just in denial, but Jack how could you not fall in love with this young man who loved Libbie with everything he had to their short marriage. l felt the author was very knowledgeable or has experienced a situation similar to this amazing story as it was written about in depth and with compassion . The way in which the story was written helps the reader understand exactly what it would be like to live with someone who has a personality disorder. Congrats on a great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An emotional journey
Romance isn't my favorite genre but this book really drew me in. The middle section of the book which tells the story of Jack and Libbie's marriage feels a little drawn out and repetative but perhaps this was my impatience to find out how the story ends. Thoroughly enjoyable, the ending made me cry!

4.0 out of 5 stars A long and difficult story - will it have a Happy Ever After?
Jack and Libbie loved each other from their early school days. But even the happiest of couples can fall apart with time and health problems and emotions creating misundersandings that is change lives.
I really enjoyed this book - the emotions it gave were deep and even distressing. DO read this story it is really quite wonderful.
