Spine Leaders

Isador Lieberman, MD, MBA, is the director of the scoliosis and spine tumor center at Texas Back Institute in Plano. He is a highly respected physician and has won numerous awards over the course of his career, including Cleveland Clinic Foundation's World Class Service Award of Excellence and the Clinical Science Award for Best Poster at the Spine Society of Europe Annual Meeting 2004.

Dr. Lieberman has a professional interest in herniated discs, kyphosis, scoliosis and minimally invasive surgical procedures. He also has an interest in spinal instrumentation and co-developed SpineAssist, a robotic tool used to perform minimally invasive spine surgery. He also has an active interest in research and served as a principal investigator for numerous clinical trials.

"I have no doubt that the technology we have in our hands today is allowing us to be much more precise and efficient in surgery, but I also have no doubt that the future of spine surgery is not implants and instruments," says Dr. Lieberman. "The future of treating spinal pathology is in biologics and there are a lot of smart people working on that. I hope that the regulatory environment allows those advances to see the light of day. No two patients are the same and no two surgeries are the same. Every case is a challenge and the most satisfying thing is successfully overcoming the challenge."

Dr. Lieberman is also actively involved in humanitarian efforts and was instrumental in the concept and design for Uganda Spine Mission, which aims at providing the best possible spine care to Ugandan patients afflicted by various debilitating spinal conditions. He has participated in several fundraising and mission trips supporting the organization.

Dr. Lieberman earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. He has also completed spine surgery fellowships at The Toronto Hospital and Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, United Kingdom. He has also earned a Master's in Business Administration degree from Cleveland State University.
