Theodor Seuss Geisel was born 2 March 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He graduated Dartmouth College in 1925, and proceeded on to Oxford University with the intent of acquiring a doctorate in literature. At Oxford he met Helen Palmer, who he wed in 1927. He returned from Europe in 1927, and began working for a magazine called Judge, the leading humor magazine in America at the time, submitting both cartoons and humorous articles for them. Additionally, he was submitting cartoons to Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. In some of his works, he'd made reference to an insecticide called Flit. These references gained notice, and led to a contract to draw comic ads for Flit. This association lasted 17 years, gained him national exposure, and coined the catchphrase "Quick, Henry, the Flit!"

In 1936 on the way to a vacation in Europe, listening to the rhythm of the ship's engines, he came up with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was then promptly rejected by the first 43 publishers he showed it to. Eventually in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to at least moderate success.

During World War II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Captain Geisel would write for Frank Capra's Signal Corps Unit (for which he won the Legion of Merit) and do documentaries (he won Oscar's for Hitler Lives and Design for Death). He also created a cartoon called Gerald McBoing-Boing which also won him an Oscar.

In May of 1954, Life published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel's publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important, asked him to cut the list to 250 words (the publishers idea of how many words at one time a first grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him published The Cat in the Hat , which went on to instant success.

In 1960 Bennett Cerf bet Geisel $50 that he couldn't write an entire book using only fifty words. The result was Green Eggs and Ham . Cerf never paid the $50 from the bet.

Helen Palmer Geisel died in 1967. Theodor Geisel married Audrey Stone Diamond in 1968. Theodor Seuss Geisel died 24 September 1991.

Also worked under the pen name: Theo Le Sieg

The Best Of Dr. Seuss contains stories from three different books, The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back and Dr. Seuss's ABC. They are all fun to read. I love the whimsical cat and his mischiefs. Dr. Seuss's books are all so creative and imaginative but I especially love the art, it's just so different and catchy. Also, his books always make me smile.

BIG Z
little z
what begins with Z?
I do.
I am a Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz as you can plainly see.

Okay, as an adult I do see some merit in the poetry itself, but as both a child and an adult I don't particularly like the illustrations, and I loathe the cat itself and the plot! When I was younger I would feel uncomfortable reading it, and as an adult I now see that the cat manages to be quite a good unintentional metaphor for abuse in the form of emotional manipulation.

Throughout the whole story the children have no control over the situation and are forced to take part in the bad things the cat is doing (and cleaning up his mess), while feeling uncomfortable. These two posts summarise quite well the issues with his behaviour: Mixed Feelings: The Cat in the Hat & Consent and The Cat in the Hat is just THE WORST. There is no happy ending, with either the children being able to gain control of the situation or someone stepping in and helping them, and he just comes back in another book to hurt them again. Realistic maybe, but it's not the message of hope I wanted as a child, and it always left me feeling uneasy with a bitter aftertaste.

This book, combining three of Dr Seuss' texts is a lovely book for the children to read independently as well as the teacher for whole-class reading. With texts such as Dr Seuss' ABC, the children can enjoy reading or listening to his texts.

Vera Violet Vinn is very very very awful on her violin.

This is a compilation book that contains The Cat In The Hat, The Cat In The Hat Comes Back and finally, Dr Seuss' ABC.

Now there are multiple ways of reviewing it, but firstly I'll start by taking each of these books separately.

The Cat In The Hat

This was Dr. Seuss' first book and I say it's pretty good. The art is fantastic and the colours are very well used. Now, in comparison toHow The Grinch Stole The Christmas this one falls pretty short of my expectations. Maybe it is wrong to compare the two, but, unfortunately, that's what I've been thinking while reading. Anyway, the book's done its job and made me think about how I used to watch and love cartoons when I was a little child. Oh, how'd I go back to those times!

The Cat In The Hat Comes Back

Much to my surprise, I actually liked it more than the original. Maybe it is a peculiar thing to say, as many have accused this book of being repetitive. Well, I found that exact same repetition to be quite funny and cute. The art was again up to par and the illustrations likewise.

Dr. Seuss' ABC

Interesting approach to the alphabet. I liked it a lot and you can really see that he was inspired. Some of the letters really made me laugh. Truly a fun way to learn!

All in all, it's a very good pick. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I can only hope that one day I'll see my children pick it up from my shelf.

If I was the fish I would have said to the children "You stupid, I'm scared of this cat, I'm a fish, it will eat me!". And Thing One and Thing Two created such mess!

In the second story it tells you the alphabet and tells you not to be very bad and so I don't really like much of the stories because it's telling you things. And in this story why didn't the cat think about it in the first place for the tiniest cat Z to open his hat and take the voom out of it's hat?

In the third story it is very funny becuase it says "Big H little h hungry horse. Hay. Hen in hat! Hooray! Hooray!".

Dr. Seuss continues to ignite a love of words, story and laughter watching parents try to keep up with his good-natured tongue twisters and reassuring prose. Just think, before we had Dr. Seuss we could only "See Jane run. See Spot run. Jane and Spot run fast." Riveting for sure but lacking a little in the belly laughs department.

Three great Seuss classics in one: The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, and Dr Seuss's ABC. I am delighted to add this to my collection for visiting children. The Cat in the Hat books feature a remarkably naughty cat who makes life chaos for the two children, but happily restores order before their mother comes home. Great fun.

Contains:

The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back and Dr. Seuss' ABC.

Written in poetry, the kids love Dr. Seuss's books and these three are three of the best. The ABC is also instructional and fun.
