Johnny Depp’s Rolling Stone interview is a drunk, incoherent, crazy mess

The Hollywood Vampires perform live at Liseberg Amusement Park

A few days ago, we got a tip and the scans of Johnny Depp’s Rolling Stone interview. I wanted to wait until RS put the piece online, because I honestly don’t care about Depp enough to spend the time to transcribe this mess. Apparently, Depp spent 72 hours with the RS journalist, bingeing on wine and smoking joints. The Rolling Stone writer doesn’t sugarcoat it at all: Depp was barely lucid for large chunks of the interview. I don’t want to hype this up too much, but this is one of the craziest f–king celebrity profiles I’ve ever read in my life. If you have some time, please read the full piece, and you will end up gasping at least twice.

The first time I gasped at this piece was when the writer didn’t pull his punches about this being Johnny Depp’s “last days.” Depp is described as “alternately hilarious, sly and incoherent.” Depp has a “scared, hunted look about him.” He stays up all night, drinking wine and smoking pot, then sleeps all day. His vibe is described as “a boyish insouciance has slowly morphed into an aging man-child, still charismatic but only in glimpses. If his current life isn’t a perfect copy of Elvis Presley’s last days, it is a decent facsimile.”

Depp is a man who has reportedly made $650 million over the course of his career, and he’s lost almost all of it, which is why Depp agreed to do this piece. No, I’m saying that the wrong way – Depp didn’t agree to Rolling Stone’s request. His “lawyer” Adam Waldman contacted RS and asked if they’d like to do an interview with Depp so that Depp could set the record straight about his dueling lawsuits with his ex-managers. Rolling Stone did a cursory investigation into who Waldman really is, and this is what they found:

Waldman made it clear he was doing an end-run without the involvement of Robin Baum, Depp’s formidable publicist of many years. I started looking into the case and Waldman to see if he was legit. There was stuff about him being Cher’s lawyer – the singer is godmother to his daughter Pepper – but the first hit was a Business Insider story that read “Here Are the American Executives Who Are Working on Behalf of Putin.” Waldman was the first on the list, which detailed his service for Oleg Deripaska, an aluminum magnate and Russian oligarch with strong ties to the Russian president.

According to Business Insider, Waldman has been paid more than $2.3 million for his work on behalf of Deripaska. Meanwhile, Deripaska became a bit player in the Russian-collusion scandal when it was reported by The Washington Post that then-Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort offered to give Deripaska private briefings on the campaign shortly before the GOP convention. Waldman had his own cameo in the Putin-Trump meshugas. In February, none other than Trump would accuse him in a typically factually distorted tweet – without naming him – of trying to broker a meeting between Trump-dossier writer Christopher Steele and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner. In April, Deripaska was placed on Trump’s sanctioned list, making it exceedingly difficult for Deripaska’s holdings to do business in the United States.

Waldman joined the game in October 2016, having been told by a client that Depp needed help. TMG had just slapped the foreclosure notice on his L.A. homes for failure to make payments on a $5 million loan from the company. TMG had filed it as a nonjudicial foreclosure so there were no public filings. The public at this point had no idea of Depp’s financial situation. Waldman was about to change that. He says he joined Depp for dinner at the Bel Air home of Ed White, Depp’s new accountant. Waldman says that White mentioned that he believed TMG had taken a cavalier approach to Depp’s accounts. Waldman listened closely and said he’d investigate the situation. Waldman and Depp quickly became compadres. When Waldman would find a friend he thought was on the Mandels’ side, he’d call the star and just say, “Tessio,” after the Abe Vigoda character who betrays the Corleones in The Godfather. Depp instantly understood and would mutter back, “F–king Tessio.”

[From Rolling Stone]

So, that was my second gasp – Depp is in bed with one of Putin’s American agents, basically. Maybe Robert Mueller should expand the investigation? This would explain why The Hollywood Vampires were doing shows all over Russia too. Isn’t it a typical Russian-mob tactic to latch onto someone on the downswing and bleed that person completely dry? That’s what this feels like. Anyway, the rest of the article is full of dumb Depp sh-t, like Depp finding Don Rickles’ racist jokes really funny, and how he really feels about Harvey Weinstein (Depp saw Weinstein be nice to his child once, so, you know) and how Depp really does have someone on staff full-time to read him his lines through an earpiece.

What else? He doesn’t talk about Amber Heard directly, because they both have non-disclosure agreements as part of their divorce. He does say that after the divorce, “I was as low as I believe I could have gotten…” and then talks about how that time in his life was so bad that he was just pouring himself glasses of vodka to drink while he wept and wrote. To be clear, he wasn’t just upset about Amber, he’s also this upset about his money. This whole thing is such a giant mess.

So….what does everyone here think is going on? Partying and aging? Liver problems? What is this look? It’s not a good one :/

    • Mia4s says:

Drinking and…other stuff. Read the part of the profile about how quickly he…recovers…from being tired. Suddenly down right energetic. Yeah…

    • Floydee Mercer says:

Looks similar to Rock Hudson in his final days.

    • Hmmm says:

At one point the writer says everyone is tired when depp slips away to another room and comes back rejuvenated. Cocaine?

    • Siiiigh says:

Alcoholism is scary. I speak as someone who has gotten extremely close to having serious, lasting effects. I mean, to be honest, I will eventually *definitely* suffer from liver, oral, and throat issues, potentially cancer. That’s just reality. I drank so, so heavily (constantly) for a long time, to the point where I would dread going to bed because I knew I’d be shaky, unstable, and sick all the next day. It makes my gums taste like burning rubber. My throat gets so sore my voice drops. It changes your mood and your cognitive functions. For a long time I had a hard time remembering things (admittedly I don’t have a great memory anyway, but it definitely didn’t help). At this point, where he’s spent the majority of his life in an intoxicated stupor, he has NO idea who he is, and when he is sober, there’s no way he feels like he is living in reality. When I first stopped drinking and had to sit around with myself and actually exist … wow. It was a wake-up call. At this stage, after decades of being not-in-reality, I honestly think he would need intensive therapy and probably a live-in caretaker to help him find his reality again, and that’s basically a best-case scenario. Most likely he will die of cirrhosis or cancer, and if he’s lucky enough to not die, he will live the rest of his life as an incoherently rambling, physically unstable, shaky old man who cannot control his bowels or his hands. I’m a young woman. I drank for only about 5 years of my life, but holy lord, there’s no way I won’t pay for them with at least five years taken off at the end. It is scary.

      • HelloThere says:

@Siiiigh, thank you for sharing that.

Thanks for sharing! Glad you managed to pull yourself out of that! I whish you all the best for the future!

As someone who’s spent 1st hand time w Hunter Thompson I’d say Johnny kind of swallowed this character. The whole “inebriated as soulful” thing is such a load. Hunter called his young pretty wife on the phone after a fight (she was at the gym) and said “listen to this” as he shot himself. He died warbling, liver distended, and debatably masochistic. That’s booze, that’s not soulful.

      • magnoliarose says:

@siiigh Thank you for sharing your experiences. I hope there is some therapy for your body that can help you overcome the physical toll addiction has taken on you.

        @Cheerleederrr
It IS a load of crap. It is like the heroin addicts in the 90s worshipping Jim Carroll like it was cool or William S Burroughs and fools who thought his addictions were cool.

Depp wants desperately to be a legend but he’s shallow and underdeveloped.

      • still_sarah says:

I looked up Depp’s age – he is 55 years old. I wondered because my dad was an alcoholic and of course all his friends were too. They all started declining seriously in their ’50’s with various chronic health problems that had them going back and forth to doctors and specialists and in and out of hospitals with “flare ups”. And then they were all dying in their ’60’s from these chronic health problems (liver, lung disorders, cancer, etc.). Depp is right on track for that, it seems.

    • Moe says:

Does anyone else here feel nauseated by the Epic waste of so much money? It seems morally wrong that someone could blow through 650 million dollars on absolutely f*** all. It’s so disconnected from reality from what people are dealing with day today. Very flippant and dare i say ungrateful. Hope thats not too sanctimonious.

      • Kate says:

        *waves*
Hi, I’m a teacher. Went on strike this year for a sliiiight raise in our already paltry salary. Fame and its excesses disgusts me on every level.

      • K says:

I agree, it’s offensively wasteful. I stopped watching his films because I don’t want to support his mess. But I’ve known some addicts and this is very familiar, whether they have $100 to their name or $100 million. The chemical changes to an addict’s brain gives them tunnel vision until they’ll let everything else in the world slide except their drug of choice. Many get to the point where they would rob their own grandmother or prostitute themselves for a few hundred dollars to piss away immediately, to muffle the creeping feelings of guilt, sadness and shame.

He’s just been protected from that lowest level of desperation and hasn’t been forced to learn how to live like a “normal” person (prioritizing practicalities like paying bills and feeding their family over splurging on junk.) As much as I envy his money, I wouldn’t spend it responsibly if I were an addict, either. I’d rather have a healthy brain and free will. He will die early and in great pain if no one stops him.

    • raincoaster says:

He’s drinking as if he was young, but when you’re old it hits you MUCH harder. He’s always been a drinker/drugger. I mean, he was assigned to help keep Hunter S. Thompson out of trouble on a book tour, but Thompson ended up sending him home, because he got into more trouble than Thompson did.

  2. Squirrelgirl says:

I was cautiously optimistic that someone on his team would have him talk about taking responsibility for his actions but no. He was a full fledged victim throughout the entire article. Blaming money problems on his family and friends and how THEY drove him to drink and smoke all day. I was eyerolling the whole time but the piece is good. It really does capture him, doesn’t it?

    • KBB says:

It sounds like he and his attorney circumvented Robin Baum (his publicist) to do this interview, so I’m not surprised he comes off looking how he does. His attorney sounds like a total sycophant and possibly just a grifter.

Although I admit I feel a little bad for him after reading this, he’s just so pathetic. What a sad life he leads. The part about how he used to be known as a chivalrous guy, and then it details the Amber Heard situation, he has fallen so far. He has destroyed his legacy completely.

  3. roses says:

He is another one blaming all his problems on someone else. No you are a middle age 56 year old man who needs to take responsibility for the mess created. He seems like someone just lost and doesn’t even know who Johnny is or ever was because he’s too busy latching on to other people’s personalities and trying to live out their lives as his own (i.e. Keith Richards, Marlon Brandon, and etc.).

    • Surely Wolfbeak says:

He should try emulating Keith Richards’ self awareness.

    • Shasha says:

I’m convinced he has borderline personality disorder, which is kind of tragic. It often arises from child abuse. But the person can out in ways that are awful. He’s responsible for his abusiveness. But I also think he has a disorder, one which is often very hard for a lot of people to overcome. (Although it is possible if the person seeks help.)

The problem is, the nature of the illness causes people to see themselves at victims, so they resist getting help, as the problem is not them…

  4. Irene says:

I have said this once and I will say it again. Every since he dumped Vanessa, Depp’s life has been on a downhill slope faster than the Titanic sunk.

    • Alexandria says:

I believe having babies made him hustle and take his life seriously but once they grew up his demons returned to collect him.

      • Hmmm says:

Having kids made him want to make money so he could buy them whatever they want. He was told to sell one of his homes and he agreed but then his daughter threw a temper tantrum because she didn’t want him to sell her childhood home – he didn’t sell it.

    • kk2 says:

Is it clear he dumped her? I assumed she saw him spiraling into this mess and left him.

      • Bread and Circuses says:

Things were really weird for about a year before Vanessa and Johnny broke up officially, mainly in terms of Johnny acting single and Vanessa insisting everything was fine.

I’m convinced they broke up at the start of that year but didn’t announce it in order to give their kids time to get used to the new normal before the press learned the truth.

And I’m sure she dumped him. He was spiraling before they split, not merely since they split.

    • Milla says:

He had some sense of stability with Vanessa and the kids. He was always messed up, depressed, anxious, alcoholic, but this several past years… I miss his weird roles, and his interviews were interesting. He became such a joke.

    • Meggles says:

He’s said Vanessa knew how to deal with his ‘episodes’ and could talk him down when he got into rages. It sounds like Vanessa had a pretty tough time of it, but some women make it their jobs to ‘manage’ male anger. It’s a real shame. Poor Vanessa.

      • Capepopsie says:

I doubt She made it her job to manage him!
It’s more like it was dumped in her lap, so She was forced to ”managing”
She is probably happy to be free!

      • Meggles says:

Actually I think she did. Some women do exactly that; they see men who are severely damaged and make it their mission to fix them and handle them. From what Depp has said, Vanessa actively worked to ‘manage’ him in a way Amber refused to do. He more or less explicitly said the fact Amber refused to “manage” his rages the way Vanessa did is the reason their relationship split up, and he made it pretty clear he felt a partner’s job is to do that level of emotional babysitting. Amber made it clear she wasn’t willing to do that, even though in the videos she clearly is trying to pacify him.

I’m not saying this to blame Vanessa, I’m just saying according to Depp’s own statements he was not some kind of cleaned up guy during his relationship with her, he was still a substance abuser with serious rage issues. I hate the narrative that the love of a good woman made him turn over a new leaf and become sober, loving Johnny. He was never anything but drunken rage Johnny. He just happened to be with a woman who cleaned him up and calmed him down and kept it out of the press. There are strong rumours that he beat Vanessa so badly during one vacation in the Caribbean he was forced to leave the island or risk arrest.

      • Shasha says:

Someone here on this site has previously said the name of the island and the year, because they said they were also there at the time. Anyone remember?

      • Capepopsie says:

Okay, you’re Probably right, in which case he is even more pathetic! Poor Vanessa! I Hope She is doing Good now, She surely deserves to be in a better place than the one he put her in!
        🤭

      • KBB says:

Vanessa released a statement claiming he was gentle and never physically abusive with her. If she tried to discredit Amber when she knew he was capable of hitting a woman, she’s a pretty terrible person. I’m guessing he never actually hit her though. Winona said the same thing.

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he hit Kate Moss though. Who he is today is a lot like who he was with Kate Moss. I think he goes through periods where he really spirals into alcohol and drug abuse, but he has also had periods where he is calmer and more with it, though not sober by any means. I think it’s possible he was abusive to Amber and maybe Kate Moss, but not Winona or Vanessa.

    • magnoliarose says:

He’s always been a huge abusive drug addled mess but he had better people around him. I think Vanessa probably helped him not go entirely crazy but he’s never been solid. His lifestyle seems to have caught up with him.
I can’t believe I once fangirled him. But then I was a tween so I can forgive myself.

      • Lady D says:

I felt the same way yesterday after discovering Tommy Lee was a long-time abusive douche. I was a huge fan of Motley Crue in my late teens/early twenties.

      • Shasha says:

… you discovered yesterday that Tommy Lee was abusive? Hasn’t it been public knowledge since the early 90’s? Like police reports and magazine covers level of public knowledge?

      • KBB says:

@Lady D I’m surprised you didn’t know that about Tommy Lee. He was sentenced to six months in jail in the 90s for beating up Pamela Anderson.

    • Bridget says:

Depp surrounds himself with people who tell him what he wants to hear. Vanessa kept him somewhat reined in, but as he hit mega stardom he had the money and the access to do whatever he wants. It wasn’t the kids and it wasn’t Vanessa – it was the fact that he was relegated to the occasional Tim Burton movie and decent drama. Superstardom allowed Johnny to insulate himself from reality.

    • lucy2 says:

He did seem better when with her. But seeing him since, I think we can all say she’s definitely better WITHOUT him.

He’s a mess, and it’s a waste. A waste of a life, a waste of a talent, a waste of a career. And sadly he’s hurt a lot of people around him too.

  5. Mia4s says:

As someone who tends to be more interested in the behind the scenes of show business than the product most of the time this was stunning…and very pathetic. From the behind the scenes perspective this is what happens when you do an interview on the advice of your shady Russian “business associate” without your long term and very good publicist. Robin Baum is a PR genius. She must be screaming right now. This is PR poison, but I’m fascinated that the veil has been lifted.

I really don’t think there is anyone in his life who can intervene. The clock is ticking.

    • tracking says:

      Agree with all of this.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

      @Mia4s

Agree with you on all counts.
However, he isn’t the first failing celebrity who ‘defects’ to Russia…
Gerard Depardieu and Steven Seagal come to mind.

    • Bridget says:

Baum must be furious. This piece was so bad and so embarrassing.

      • KBB says:

Especially because he and his lawyer seemed to intentionally do this behind her back

    • HelloSunshine says:

I wonder if Baum will drop him? This interview was basically a giant cannonball right through an already sinking ship of a career and life

      • Yawn says:

If Baum had any sense at all she would… but she must be getting paid from somewhere is she continues to rep for him…

  6. Mrrreow says:

He’s always been gross, it just doesn’t look as “cute” being the bad boy on a middle aged dude vs when he was in his Winona/Kate Moss era. He needs help, I don’t think his addiction issues are going to allow it.

There’s only one Keith Richards, and you’re not him, dude.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

I agree I think his looks in his younger years allowed a lot of his crap to go unnoticed, combined with the fact he is not as big a deal at the box office anymore and that layer of protection he had is withering away. On one hand I am sorry for anyone that has addiction struggles and wish them well in getting and remaining sober, on the other I am meh about this as a woman in Hollywood would not get away with 1% of his actions or aging the way he has and still be in films.

      • Meggles says:

Exactly. None of this is new. Even back in the 90s there were articles about him punching people, biting people, setting fire to things, s***ing in his underwear to make a point, and going to jail for assault then giving interview quotes like “going to jail was worth it to see the look of fear on the little maggot’s face.” He’s always been a violent sociopath but people excused it because he was hot and looked ‘soulful.’

  7. Hmmm says:

His lawyer says he’s married to the best face dr 🤔 Johnny looks so weird and it happened rapidly. Of course the tabloids and paparazzi stopped airbrushing his photos but I think he might be getting plastic surgery at the advice of the shady lawyer.

There’s a funny part of the interview when he’s asked what he thinks about it all and he says it’s the matrix but he’s never watched the matrix and didn’t understand the script. Lmao

  8. broodytrudy says:

This really was such a sad interview. I do believe Amber, which is important to say because I also believe that Johnny was, at one point, a genuinely good guy who has major issues. Between the stuff about his mom and his early hollywood life, it’s no wonder he’s ended up this way. He’s been taken advantage of (i don’t blame the mandels for this, just his own sadness) and Waldman seems like a greasy mfker.

The line that really struck me was when the reporter said there wasn’t one person who wasn’t being paid to be around him. He chased after that cash his whole life. Be careful what you wish for.

Alcoholism turns people into monsters and Depp seems no different. I really, genuinely hope he gets the help he needs. My dad struggles with is and it’s so awful to see him do things he normally never would dream of.

    • Aud says:

You summed up my thoughts exactly. I just finished reading the article, and damn, it’s a downer. That part of the article really struck me as well.

He definitely seems to have untreated mental illness, self medicated.

The phrase “final days” from the beginning is the article set the dark tone and it goes downhill from there. It reads like an obituary. Ugh.

  9. Ankhel says:

So, his friends warned him against marrying Heard, huh? The divorce then brought him so low he started drinking heavily. (Sure. We all saw the video, Johnny. You were married then.) Miserable, he wrote his memoirs on an old typewriter.

You can’t make this stuff up. THIS is a pity party. He even had to mention his typewriter was old, because he’s a 56 year old hipster.

    • Hmmm says:

The only pretty boy old fart from the 90s heartthrobs not having a pitty party these days is Tom Cruise. You never hear about that guy. Never even get paparazzi photos of him.

      • Surely Wolfbeak says:

Um, I am standing on a hill named Keanu Reeves, and I am prepared to die on it.

      • Jules says:

Keanu Reeves also comes to mind but he never seemed one of the heartthrobs who partied a lot or who cared all that much about these weird signifiers of manhood like bikes, drugs and girls.
Plus, he’s not in a cult, so I stick with Keanu all day, every day.

      • magnoliarose says:

Keanu deserves the goodwill. He’s nice for real and not just when it is convenient. Eccentric but just not a messy ass like Depp.

      • lucy2 says:

Tom’s too busy benefiting from an abuse cult.

      • Meggles says:

Keanu officially hasn’t aged since 1765 you’re fine.

      • Cath says:

@Jules, Keanu is great, but definitely HEAVY into bikes, talked a lot about bad crashes he had, barely surviving them. He’s just more of an introvert and a loner than someone like Depp, no comparison. Also doesn’t seem to care about material things like Depp did/does.

      • Rebecca says:

Tom Cruise hasn’t seen his kid in years because she doesn’t like scientology. That story is in the media all the time. Katy’s people even admitted it’s true that he doesn’t see Suri.

    • Lady D says:

Does he mention anywhere in the article about the effect the divorce and his actions had on Amber? Did he once acknowledge the shitstorm he put her through?

      • LOL says:

Exactly, he is all about himself and he is the victim when he was the one abusing people and high all the time.

      • Ankhel says:

Nope, everything is about him. Not a new trend, I’m guessing. I’m glad Vanessa got away, maybe she’ll even stop covering for him one day.

      • Jussie says:

Not defending him, because I don’t think he would have if he could have, but they did both sign very harsh NDA’s. Neither of them is allowed to do much more than acknowledge they were once married.

That’s why the article doesn’t spend much time on it even though it’s extremely relevant. Depp’s a mess, but he seems to have enough self-control left to not break that NDA.

  10. Patricia says:

I feel for his kids. It’s a nightmare watching your parent die. They are so young, there would be so many years of life left for father and children to live and enjoy together if he got well.
I don’t have much sympathy for him because I know from friends he’s been an abusive asshole since the 80s. But still I wish for him and his family that he will get well. But how can that happen when he’s entirely surrounded by paid enablers? It would maybe take his children having an intervention and threatening to cut off communication with him if he doesn’t get help. So sad for those kids.

  11. Lucy says:

Not so many years ago, I used to think he was one of the coolest, realest, most talented actors out there. Gosh.

    • Dee Kay says:

Same. When PotC came out, I got on the Depp bandwagon in a big way. I’m disappointed as hell that he’s turned out to be not only a mess, but vile and stupid and completely un-self-aware. Now I’m wondering if there is some truth to what people said about him sharing some responsibility for River Phoenix’s OD at the Viper Room. I used to think that was just River fans looking for a reason. But maybe there was something to the allegations.

      • H says:

Read the stuff Depp said about Tom Petty prior to his death – they were friends – and I bet you’ll believe Depp had a hand in on River’s death, either directly or indirectly.

    • Case says:

Same. He has honestly turned out to be the exact opposite of what I thought him to be when I first discovered him so long ago. Disappointing, and incredibly sad. I loved him so much that I can’t help but hate him now. For what he has done to himself, and certainly for what he did to poor Amber.

  12. Thatsallfolks says:

So sad to see a person deteriorate.

    • launicaangelina says:

That’s exactly how I feel. This is so horribly sad. I was a huge fan.

  13. Really says:

I can’t feel sorry for his abusive arse, he is responsible for his decisions he is not a small toddler that doesn’t have a voice, he is the one taking drugs, drinking all day and night and verbal and physically abusing people and then playing the poor little lost boy last rebel genius.
This is ridiculous and is clear that he is so full of himself that he doesn’t see anything wrong on his behavior.
I will not support this idiot in any movie.

  14. Christina says:

    I used to love him.

  15. LOL says:

Imagine the fantastic beasts press tour, I hope he can embarrass JK Rowling every chance he got, with racist jokes and his w drugs are amazing and rock roll .

    • ValiantlyVarnished says:

I was just thinking this. Someone should send JK a note that says “you bet on the wrong drug-adled abusive horse”. She is forever canceled for siding with this train wreck and I hope the Fantastic Beasts PR junket is a disaster.

    • HelloSunshine says:

At this rate, I’m not convinced JD will be alive to finish the series out. JK Rowling made a huge mistake standing by his casting (and allowing it to happen in the first place) and Im sure at this point they won’t let JD in front of cameras because he’s a disaster and no one in the Hp fandom wanted him in the movies in the first place.

    • Jamie42 says:

I wonder how much the Fantastic Beasts movie had to “cover up” for him through editing. Depp barely appears in the trailer, and when he does, he isn’t speaking; Jude Law and Eddie Redmayne do the heavy lifting. I suppose they might be holding his character back as a surprise.
But yes, JK Rowling bizarrely went out on a limb for him–hard to understand her reasoning.

  16. Anilehcim says:

He is being compared to Elvis in his final days and I think that really sums it up.

Forgive me for being morbid, but I can’t see how he’s long for his world if something doesn’t change. I’m not an apologist, I’m just noting that he’s surrounded himself with enablers and isolated himself from the ones who truly cared and those situations never end well, especially when substance abuse is a factor.

    • still_sarah says:

I agree. His body will give out as he is drinking & drugging hard it seems and he is in an old man’s body. It can only take so much.

  17. Chaine says:

I do believe he’s in his last days after reading the whole thing. Not a good sign when your lawyer seems to live with you full time enabling and encouraging your irresponsibility and addictions. It reminds me of Anna Nicole Smith and her lawyer Howard K. Stern.

  18. saltandpepper says:

    He is disgusting AF.

  19. Originaltessa says:

I’m not a doctor but he looks like he’s in liver failure and is probably going to die soon.

  20. Max says:

I read the whole piece and I have a number of thoughts about it.
It’s probably the most depressing interview- profile I’ve ever read regarding such a famous person. Depp seems lost and isolated, like he doesn’t care about anything anymore. He’s obviously depressed and he’s seeking treatment through drugs and alcohol which is never a good idea. Depp was always a person who said that he’s lonely but this time it really seems like he doesn’t have anyone not even family and I’m sure it pains him. The only good thing I can say is that this interview was done months ago so maybe in some miraculous way things aren’t that bad anymore. I’m saying this cause I’ve heard from people that he’s fine now but maybe its because of the tour and because he has some good people around him like Alice Cooper, who I don’t Imagine not trying to help Depp with the addictions. It’s also sad that he doesn’t even have family close to him anymore. His mother was the only family that he was still close with.
Having said all that it just seems a bit odd that his lawyer invited RS for an interview and a positive piece cause it looks like the writer didn’t want this at all.At times I felt like the writer was observing an animal in its cage and it was a bit disturbing because the man might be suffering from mental problems. His lawyer seem sketchy af and no wonder he didn’t ask Baum’s permission for this. How can you have Robin Baum and trust this person more than her, who’s been with you since forever???
Jesus, Depp has all the wrong people around him and if he continues abusing his body with all kind of drugs and alcohol it won’t end well.
I feel sorry for his kids, they are still so young and if it’s painful for an observant like us to watch , imagine what it feels like to watch your father losing touch with reality and getting isolated. And on top of that the whole world also watches with you. Just a very sad situation all together. I know many say there should be no sympathy but it’s not easy to see a person so deep in addictions and depression and not feel at least a bit sorry.

  21. Skippy says:

I am sad to read that Johnny wasted his career, his money, his wife and his previous relationship with Vanessa. He has no one to blame but himself and sadder still he doesn’t know that. I expect he will come to a bad end. Lots of people make a mess of their lives. The only difference is this guy is a celebrity.

  22. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Can’t believe I just read all that, but I did lol. It’s sad, but he’s the personification of celebrity ignorance and arrested development. First thing that popped into my head while reading was that his death would be headlining sooner over later.

  23. Wellsie says:

I didn’t find much surprising in the article at all. Wasn’t all this pretty clear before? Meh.

  24. Spike says:

Big boy whiny one percenter – be a frakking adult. Sell your island & yacht, 100 pieces of art work. Keep a few homes & cars. Bankrupt. BS. Extract your head from your posterior.

As for addictions, mental issues, all I have to say is – https://youtu.be/sMl94J6fbDw

  25. Hoping says:

I feel so sorry for his kids who not only see their father in these conditions but under the public eye and comments.

  26. Maum says:

The fact that he changed the ‘Slim’ tattoo he got for Amber to ‘Scum’ says it all.

Bitter pathetic little man. He’s probably spiralling because he’s losing his looks and her turning from cute bad boy to ranting old man.

  27. Case says:

There was a time when I loved him so much. So talented, so handsome, seemingly very kind. I think he was a good person at one point, but his demons overwhelmed him. I cancelled him the moment Amber came out with her allegations because I believe her wholeheartedly — the dude has always had rage issues, even when he had his addictions under control. I don’t regret dropping him for a second to support her — she’s lovely and he dragged her through the mud, which disgusts me. But at the same time, he just makes me really sad. And angry. I hate him for what he has done to himself.

  28. Harryg says:

    He is scary.

  29. H says:

I don’t believe he’ll be on this Earth much longer unless he gets help. And he needs to sell his French villa. His kid is an adult and one of the lessons you learn is when your parents get older, they sell your childhood home and usually retire. Depp needs the money and I think it was selfish of her to throw a “temper tantrum” about it.

    • Lady D says:

      Apple, tree?

    • broodytrudy says:

Please, Depp was the parent. His daughter was 15 or 16 at that point, and from this article it’s likely the family wasn’t super aware of the financial trouble as he kept buying them things. Can we please not blame a teenager for his shitty decision? What a horrible comment.

      • Lady D says:

I did not blame Lily-Rose for his actions. I was just wondering if some of his issues might have been passed on biologically, the temper being one of them.

    • vvc says:

He has other homes he’s still refusing to sell despite drowning in debts. It’s not on his kid, he wouldn’t have sold it anyway.

  30. emma peel says:

The industry still loves him – he’ll claim bankruptcy, and rebuild his empire with the millions Hollywood will continue to pay him. He’ll be just fine, unfortunately.

    • KBB says:

Have you seen photos of him lately? He can make a comeback, but I don’t think he has the looks for the big budget stuff much longer.

  31. Anna says:

I feel sad for his children that he doesn’t seem to show any interest in getting his shit together. Go to rehab, go to bed at night and try to appreciate the basic pleasures in life. Back in the day he could do no wrong in my eyes, he was one of the seemingly coolest, hottest guys alive. Sad that he had everything anybody could wish for on paper and it’s come to this.

  32. trh says:

    Over-reach himself,
    Over-spend himself,
    Over-rate himself.”

  33. Rebecca says:

It’s interesting that Johnny Depp is so used to being well liked and treated like he’s special because he’s a celebrity that he had no idea the interviewer might portray him honestly or in a negative light. He probably thought he did a great interview and was shocked when he read the article.

  34. SJhere says:

I just read the RS interview.
The man still currently owns 14 houses, a private Island and a yacht.
    Bankrupt my ass.
If he has actually spent a large portion of his $650Million wealth, without say, oh I dunno….curing a medical disease or rebuilding the Katrina hit area of LA personally renaming it DPtown…shaking my dang head. I can’t find the words to express my revulsion on squandering wealth of this level.
And do not even try to get sympathy from me for anybody who has that level of money saying “I trusted them, I had no idea they were stealing from me.”
Well, lesson learned I guess, huh? Idiot.
For a guy who says he grew up poor…I have zero explainationnation for that way of thinking.
My family is/has been working class (and we busted our asses to work our way up from dirt poor) and I assure you that we ALL watch our money like Hawks.

I feel sorry for anyone who has no family or friends to confide in, and this article really sounds like Depp is surrounded by yes men and people on his payroll only. Which is pretty damn close to Elvis for certain. OTOH, Depp sounds like he is reaping what he has sewn, as the saying goes. Years of drinking and heavy drug abuse are gonna catch up with ya, they don’t care who you think you are.

  35. dota says:

One thing that really bothers me is his management company, knowing he is a drunken drug addicted unstable mess, made oral contracts with him and expects the court to uphold them. Can someone who has been drunk and drugged for the last 30 years legally sign a contract? You cannot testify in court if drunk but you can sign multi multi million dollar agreements?

  36. Bobbiesue says:

An aside, but not mentioned much, Johnny was extremely f***ed up by the death of his good friend River Phoenix at his club the Viper Room. Many held him accountable at the time. John Frusciante was more complicitly involved, but they were all doing coke and maybe more together just before he collapsed. Because Depp was the public face of the Viper Room people pointed fingers at him. This and a very disturbing childhood are just one of the many events that have lead him down a destructive path it seems.

    • vvc says:

56 is a bit old to blame your issues on childhood. He can afford 24/7 therapy with the best therapists in the world. Instead, he buys drugs and expensive wine. It’s no shock he’s stuck in the same spot he was at when he was young if instead of working through his issues, he pours booze over them.

  37. Originaluna says:

I just realized that the last movie i remember watching with him on was The Rum Diary and I thought it was so… realistic? Even the way his character got so obssessed and infatuated by Amber’s character. Well. We all know what followed in real life. A steady decline.
I am happy she came out of that. And… i hope he can recover, really admit his wrongdoing, throw some apologies. But hey thats hopeful and optimistic me. I know it’s unlikely.
