Does ABC’s Appointment of a New Anchor for ‘World News’ Carry a Subliminal Message?

Wednesday's announcement that ABC News has named a new anchor for its nightly "World News" broadcast has led some observers to suggest that the move broadcasts a subliminal message, TVNewser reports.

David Muir is set to take over the network's evening newscast from Diane Sawyer in September, as previously reported. The story points out that the shift means three white men will again anchor the three network evening news programs.

“Is it 2005 — or 1975 — all over again? Some think so,” the story notes.

Said Temple University Associate Professor of journalism Karen Turner: “In this growing multicultural nation, it’s unconscionable that as of September three white men will lead their respective networks.”

Brian Williams has anchored “NBC Nightly News” since 2004, while Scott Pelley has been at the anchor desk on "CBS Evening News" since 2011, when he took over for Katie Couric.

“Certainly Pelley, Williams and now Muir are accomplished journalists,” Turner said. “However, the subliminal message this sends is these — white males — are the legitimate faces that should represent America.”
