What Questions to Ask Your Painting Contractor

What Questions to Ask Your Painting Contractor

Here is what you should ask a painting contractor to make sure you hire the right one for the job.

If you’re going to get painting done, it’s often best to get it done professionally. Professionals will never make mistakes on the job, so you know you’ll get your money’s worth. Also, you won’t have to purchase any of the materials needed for the job because they will come with tools of their own that they also have to maintain. The only thing you have to do is decide which painting contractor to hire.

All contractors will promise you the best services in the area. Naturally, not all contractors can live up to this promise, so you’ll have to ask some questions to figure out which one is really the best. Here is what you should ask a painting contractor to make sure you hire the right one for the job.

Do You Offer a Free Estimate?

Asking this question lets you know what you can expect from a cost perspective right away. Ask your contractor what they will include in their estimate. You should expect the estimate to include expenses such as preparatory work and the expected paint and primer that will be used. A painting contractor should give this estimate to you in-person rather than over the phone, so they can see the layout of the area and make that estimate as accurate as possible.

What Are Your Credentials?

Always ask to get your company’s insurance information before you hire them. It’s best if you hire a painting contractor with general liability insurance because it will protect you from any liability if something goes wrong on your property. Workers’ compensation may be mandatory as well, depending on the state.

Who Will Help Work on the Project?

For projects that will take more time than one day to get done, you’ll want to know if the same people will be working on your project for the entire time. It’s also good to know who you’ll be contacting during the project’s progression. Ask if your painting contractor has any subcontractors that they use. If they use subcontractors, ask if there will be a representative from the company who will be on the job site with all of the subcontractors.

Can You Provide References?

Ask your painting contractor for a list of references. If a company tries to avoid handing you references, it’s a signal that they might be trying to hide negative reviews that they have received.

Companies that give you references without hesitation often have nothing to hide because they provide quality work. Some companies might even provide you references without you needing to ask because they want to show you how satisfied their previous clients were with their finished products.
