The 26-year-old trooper was reported in stable condition at Bayhealth General Hospital, authorities said.
The trooper, a 4-year veteran of the force, was responding to a report of a violent domestic dispute in the Dover suburb about 7 a.m. when the shooting occurred, said Sgt. Paul Shavack, a state police spokesman.
According to Shavack, the trooper stopped a car as part of the investigation and the man inside came out with a gun in his hand.
