Ladies, Let's Stop Saying Sorry All the Time

"Sorry" is the first word that comes out of my mouth (or keyboard) when there's a potential conflict or when I have to assert myself. "Sorry," however, is just as much a verbal tic as saying "um" or "uh," except it's even worse because it undermines us and puts us in an inferior position when we say "sorry" without cause.

Women tend to apologize more than men do. It's an ingrained habit that starts at an early age. While not necessarily a female problem (anyone who's very focused on maintaining harmony and how others feel can be overly apologetic), the commercial above from Pantone points out that it's time for women to stop saying sorry for no good reason.

Fast Company offers a few strategies for nixing this bad habit, such as using a different phrase (e.g., "Let me say this") or embrasing silence. Let what you say carry weight without being afraid you're too aggressive, and only say "sorry" if you're really sorry or have something to be sorry about.
