A rookie cop and a chance meeting with two men. One is strait-laced and perfect. The other is a tattooed, pierced, foul-mouthed criminal.

One is everything right and safe. A compliment to her in personality and temperament.

The other is all danger, mystery, and contradiction. Entirely wrong for her, yet so perfectly right.

When their worlds collide, Lucy Diamond will learn the true meaning of love and sacrifice as she embarks on the road of no return with bad boy, Jude Wallace, and good guy, Ian Clarke.

Like a thief in the night, love will take her by surprise.

* Read as part of the Branded: A Bad Boys Anthology *

Oh, this is bad...

I am a very generous GR reviewer. Really. I averagely give 4-5 stars and don't like writing negative reviews.

But this one deserves it. And I'm gonna have to write it. Prepare yourself for some ranting...

Lucy Diamond is a picture perfect rookie cop. She has always wanted to be one, since her father is also a well-known Detective. On a night that Lucy and her partner Sarah are checking out a domestic disturbance report, things get complicated and Lucy ends up killing a man to save her partner. She becomes a shell of her former self after that day. Nightmares haunt her every night. She feels nothing. She is just empty. But all that changes when her world collides with that of Jude Wallace.

Jude is a tattooed and pierced professional car thief. He is a "bad boy". He works for one of the most dangerous criminals, Simon Long. He has to get one last car for him to get a fat check for his hard work. When he gets to the place where this particular car is supposed to be at, he spots a woman. A beautiful woman that he is instantly attracted to...

Yes. You've guessed right. There's insta-love in this, people. I normally already hate it, but this one topped every other annoying case for me.

The urge to touch her overwhelmed Jude. He longed for her. He ached for her. He needed her, and the thought of needing someone scared him to death.

Jude hasn't even clearly seen her FACE when he thought of these lines. He has been busy hiding in the dark and stalking her for the last half an hour. He just knows her silhouette, her hair color and what the side of her face looks like in the dark.

When some other guy approaches Lucy, Jude's spidey senses scream "Danger!" and he goes all...:

...and, naturally, runs to her rescue, getting seriously beaten up by the other guy. At this point, Lucy must have remembered that she is a damn cop, so she pulls her gun and points at the men. The scary mystery guy runs away, but Jude stays on the ground.

And what happens do you think? They start French kissing . 10 minutes after meeting in a situation involving scary dudes, fighting, blood and guns, Lucy lets this total stranger stick his tongue in her mouth in public.

...and kissed him with the intensity of a woman in love. She wanted to consume and be consumed by him.
(...)
It didn't matter that this was a public place. It didn't matter that she'd known this man all of five seconds. All that mattered was he brought her back to life and in his arms she felt whole again.

While all this is happening, not once does Lucy think about the possibility that this guy might be just distracting her. He might take her gun at any point. Oh wait what was Lucy's job again? She was a police officer. Right...

Of course, after rolling tongues for a while, they go to her place and shack up. Oh and by the way, there was NO steamy sexy stuff either. The author apparently decided to leave it at "and then they made sweet sweet love" . Ugggh!

After the deed is done, they make small talk and at some point Jude lies about what he does for a living, obviously. Lucy senses something's off, but she thinks...:

It doesn't matter. Her heart and body both screamed those three little words at her, making her forget to worry about what the man in her bed could really be.

The next morning (Yes. Not even 24 hours has passed yet.) when Jude goes back home, he has a heart-to-heart with his roommate Ryker about his sudden change of heart about women and gets angry when Ryker calls Lucy a "chick".

"She's not some chick."

Says the guy that didn't even remember the name of the woman he slept with 2 minutes after climaxing YESTERDAY. Wow. What a change in character in less than 24 hours...

I mean, slow down dude. Slow the hell down! The author has MESSED UP trying to create a "deep, emotional, sweet bad boy with a scary look". It's not like I don't like that kind of male MC, I actually love that whole cliché, but this one...this one was just a mess. A terrible mess.

Oh and meanwhile, Lucy is talking about the same thing with her partner Sarah...

"I believe him, Sarah. He has no reason to lie to me."

Are you still with me? Because here comes the best part: At day THREE , Lucy drops the L bomb! Yes people, she utters the words "I love you." at day 3...

I don't want to tell you the rest of the story (There's really not much to tell anyway...*eye roll*)...but let's just say that the whole story happened in SIX DAYS and there were a whole lot of stupid actions and uttered words.

The plot was incredibly predictable and terribly boring. The so-called twists were...well, funny.

And the writing was even worse. The POV kept changing for no reason! The book was supposed to be a dual POV, but there were paragraphs with POVs of supporting characters like Sarah and Ryker sprinkled here and there.

If it wasn't a novella, I would have DNFed it at the first few pages. But alas, I hate to DNF books, so here we are.

Stay the hell away from this story. Just...

I thoroughly enjoyed Renegade. I really enjoyed all the Beatles references and the relationship between Lucy and Jude. I liked Ian, but I think I fell in love with Jude as soon as he saw Lucy on the pier and did what he had to do for her. When Lucy finds herself living every cop's worse nightmare, I cried. As a 911 dispatcher, officer involved shootings are hard. Really hard. Jeanne hit the nail on the head with the scenes dealing with the aftermath of the shooting--the grief and guilt Lucy felt flowed from the pages.

If you enjoy a good romantic suspense with heart, I highly recommend this one. Jeanne knocked it out of the park.

Renegade is a high-energy romantic suspense that kept me turning the page (and kept me awake reading, too!). Lucy Diamond is a rookie cop who loses her partner in a terrible gunfight. With guilt and regret her constant companions, she agrees to step into her partner's role investigating the case that'd to his death. But she doesn't expect one of the lead suspects to be her first love, or to meet a hot English guy who sweeps her off her feet.

I won't say too much about this story, because there are way too many spoilers. But both the plot line and the characterization were great, with the added bonus of references to The Beatles, one of my favourite bands.

I love books with strong female leads, and Renegade certainly has this and so much more. I loved it.

I give this story 5 glorious hearts!

This story was HOT, sexy, and full of suspense! Author Jeanne McDonald never ceases to amaze me! Her ability to paint a picture so vivid you feel as if you are walking alongside her characters is one of the many reasons, I love her stories. There were parts I felt I was right there with Lucy Diamond and Jude Wallace. From the opening scene, I was perched at the end of my chair.

So, what happens when the law collides with a high-end car thief? You get a fast-paced booked full of twists and turns to keep you flipping those pages while to try to figure out what truly is going on this Lucy Diamonds world. This book is full of surprises!

Rookie cop Lucy Diamond knew she would either become a cop or become someone the cops were always chased after. Lucky for her, the Baxter family pulled her under their wings and she finally found that loving family she always wanted. (side note if you have not read Politically Incorrect you need to!)

Lucy's world crashed unexpectedly one night with the bad boy himself Jude Wallace, her longtime friend appeared by her side out on the pier. It throws our girl for an unexpected spin.

Jude Wallace is the SEXY as sin tatted playboy. He knows exactly what a woman wants and just how to have them begging for more. He is a high-end car thief who had become employed by the dangerous Mr. Sutcliffe. Jude cannot help but toe the line with Lucy. He sees her as is light in a world of darkness.

The moment these two meet it is high-intensity roller coaster ride. And I loved every second of it. From the drama, suspense, and hot steamy scenes Author Jeanne McDonald brought it all to the table.

Only there is MORE! Lucy met a sexy British man named Ian Clarke before she met Jude out on the pier. Oh, how I loved Ian in this book. He was the perfect element to keep everyone on their game.

4.5*

I was sucked into the story from chapter one, instantly being drawn to Lucy and her internal struggle after the shooting which was beyond her control. It's a shame I can't stand the Beatles, because there are references to the band throughout the story which made me laugh.

That first kiss - hot damn, it was amazingly hot and made me want to curl my toes! It was a classic bad boy meets chick cop story with a slight twist which I loved. My only issue (and the reason i didn't give it 5*), was I wanted more. McDonald could quite easily make this a full novel.

This is an enjoyable gritty read from this author, who is new to me. Her writing flowed well with strong characters that dominated the story perfectly.

I loved rookie cop Lucy Diamond, she is a little spitfire who knew exactly what she wanted and went out to get it, being bought up in the foster care system she is determined to make something of herself. The two male characters who are so different in personalities and looks, and at first it was difficult for me to know who to trust if any of them. Both obviously embroiled in a plot so deep that kept me guessing all through the book.

In my opinion, the middle of the book lagged a little and could have done with a lot more excitement with more danger thrown in, but the last quarter of the book was nail-biting stuff which I was thoroughly engrossed in and my questions got answered.

A really quirky idea the author had, which I really loved, was that every chapter was named after a Beatles song which bought back lots of good memories. I thought this idea very novel and unusual.
This is a good book all in all and one I would recommend you read.

The life of those wearing the badge can be tough, but Lucy seems to get more than her fair share of it. It’s almost as though she’s dealt a crappy hand over and over again. I mean, she weathers through them well. Which would be expected of someone with a rough background. But she undoubtably has good instincts most of the time. Half the time I couldn’t decide whether to like Jude or not. And frankly I wasn’t sure who to root for: Ian or Jude? They were two very opposite characters with good qualities. There were a couple of big twists I didn’t see coming. And the ending really got to me. It wasn’t at all what I expected, but it was a great read!

What A Twisted Tale!

This book was amazing! I loved all of the chapter titles and Beatle references throughout the book. This book is action packed and keeps you wondering who the bad guys are. It has a woman torn between two men, one is her first love and the other is just too good to be real. There is also some hot steamy moments to entertain you. You definitely need to check this one out.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this book but it all became pretty obvious as I kept on reading more about Luce and Jude. This is the second book of Jeanne McDonald that I have read and I enjoyed it immensely. The grit and determination of both characters to do what is right and not compromise their integrity really struck a cord with me because they didn’t look for a quick fix but both were willing to fight for each other. I loved that there was an actually story line along with some love and romance. I loved reading the epilogue but that has left me wanting to read more about them. This was a great book and I highly recommend it. Congratulations to Jeanne McDonald for this wonderful book.
I received an Arc copy in exchange for an honest review

Jeanne!! This girl is fantastic. How I love characters that are fully developed. I do love a story that involves law enforcement and this switch up from the norm was awesome! Let me just say I was torn between Jude and Ian—how could I pick just one? 😉

Don't blink or you will miss something with this action packed story. Have you ever read a story and couldn't figure out who the good guy was and who was the bad guy? I did this throughout the book..I kept reading going "he is hiding something" Great story that kept me up all night! ~Jen

If you’d like a fast-paced, crazy, police adventure this is the book for you! Follow rookie cop, Lucy Diamond, as she is thrust into the dangerous world of a rookie cop. I love the adventure from the book The Renegade by Jeanne McDonald and I was surprisingly shocked by every turn the author took with Lucy. A great read and real eye-opening look at what it’s like to be a rookie cop. Highly recommend!

First by this author and I enjoyed it a lot. This story takes you on a ride that has a Gone In 60 Seconds vibe.

You get action, loss and love. Solid story with a twist or three that I definitely didn’t see coming.

Would recommend for anyone who likes a good officer/bad boy romance.

I’m a big fan of McDonald’s work and enjoyed this one so much. I loved how the past played a part in the present, how Lucy was such a strong character despite everything her life has thrown at her, and how the suspense elements add another layer.

I found myself turning the pages quickly to see what was coming next and was totally invested by the first chapter.

My only “criticism” is I would have liked to see more of the relationship developed throughout the story with the man Lucy finally chooses. However, I’m very happy with who she does end up with and the way the story ends.

Lucy is strong and independent who has had her fair share of love and it ran away. She is now a rookie cop helping on a big case. When chance would have it new love finds her. Ian is everything that she ever wanted. But at the same time Jude her first love is still around and has found Lucy too. Which love is real, can she love both men the same? What twists and turns are up the path?
I was turning pages so fast to find out what was going to happen next. The heat factor between Lucy and both of her men is off the charts and they all have their reasons. You will be guessing all the way to the end.

Renegade was a great book! The story line was awesome. Lucy was the perfect cop. She had a tough time in life and wanted to make a difference. Her partner was killed and made it extra rough for her. Her first love from years ago saved her life. She meets another guy who she really likes. Until she finds out everyone is lying to her. The story line jumped a little too quick for me, but the writing was awesome. The characters were funny but emotional at the right times.

Wow wow wow! In such a short amount of time Jeanne packed a hot sexy punch with Jude and Lucy's story. A hot part of the Branded Anthology that I can't wait to finish!!

Lucy is the law and the law is Lucy, it's in her blood. It's only right that she follows her father's footsteps. One night changed the course of her life, the path that she was on wasn't black or white anymore. The nightmares that came only amplified her need to make a change.

Jude has always been good at being bad. But he was even better at not getting caught. One last boost was all he needed then he was home free, free from under the boos, free to do what he wanted. No commitments, no steady woman in his life, that's how he liked it. One night changed Jude's course, changed it for the better, it gave him something to look forward to, something to look forward to. One last job was all it was, but that job changed everyone's life.

You need to read this anthology, it's a knock your socks off kinda thing!!

Now that's what I'm talking about!

I'm not someone for short stories or compilations, never been so when this beauty was dangled in front of me it was only that it was written by Jeanne McDonald that got me to take the leap off the peer (nudge nudge wink wink).

Jeanne McDonald has always had a way with words that pleases me and with Renegade she blows me away yet again. Each captivating moment conveyed with such beauty that I was there, in the moment with Lucy and Jude. The over powering, intense moment when love is born was so real it had me sighing.

Jude truly is a priceless canvass and a delicious bad boy. And Lucy is a beautiful diamond in the sky.

With Renegade Jeanne McDonald has done again what she does so well. She made me fall in love only to break my heart, letting it shatter into a million pieces along with Lucy's. I finished Renegade sobbing and thankful to have been part of Jude and Lucy's story and the memory of them will linger in my heart forever.

This was the first book I read by this author. I enjoyed the story right until the very end. I enjoy a good contemporary crime romance and Renegade was just that. I loved all the Beatles titles of chapters, names and establishments through the book.
I was easily entranced in Lucy and Jude's story. Lucy and Jude had a past that left Lucy with many issues but trusting others was the main one. When Lucy finally found the one man or person other family to trust she had it torn from her. I was torn between Lucy having a relationship with Ian and what was lingering with Jude.
This story is full of many twist and turns that will have you sitting at the edge of your seat. You will laugh, cry and try solving the case. This is definite must read if you love crime, romance.
I hope that there is more to this and that other characters from this find their own happy ending like these two.

***Excerpt from story***

I pulled Lucy back from Ian’s lifeless body while the paramedics did their best to revive him. I may not have cared for the man, but in his final moments , I developed a respect for Ian that was unparalleled.
I was reminded of the old scripture, ‘greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for a friend.’ And that was exactly what Ian had done. He’d risked everything for Lucy. He’d risked everything for love, and true love is sacrificing your own needs for someone you love.

I absolutely fell in love with these two characters almost immediately and my heart hurt for them. Both came up in foster care and abused while there. They had hard lives and with each others help, they are able to navigate a happier life together. Love, loss, drama, twists, turns, romance, sexiness and suspense are the reasons you will read this book from start to finish without stopping!!

A bit slow and contrived for my liking. So many parts just fall a little to perfectly in place for it to be believable. She also doesnt seem to remember she is a cop at times as situations arise where that would b useful to announce bit nope.

Also the fact that Beatles songs and names were used but not really commentes on. I mean Lucy met Jude outside the Yellow Submarine but no ones jokingly wow this is a Beatles album in the making? I dont believe that.

A cop and a thief come together in this crime style story. Lucy is a good rookie cop but actions she takes has consequences with her conscience and now she's fighting through guilt and shame. She crosses paths with Jude, the car thief, and the two have an instant bond and attraction. These two characters fight for what's right as well as for each other. Twists and turns, plus added mystery keep us on our toes as we read through the story. This in turn keeps it an interesting read.

A bit of a different take on the good girl/bad boy romance. Lucy is the good girl, a good cop that finds herself reeling after a call that causes her take someones life one night. When her path crosses with bad boy Jude Wallace they begin a whirl wind instant attraction affair that is full of action and steamy scenes.
