The Illinois House has approved legislation that would allow parents to give their children, who are medical marijuana patients, infused items on school grounds. The vote on House Bill 4870 was 99-1. Representative Lou Lang sponsored the legislation.

HB 4827 aims to require schools (regardless of public or private status) to let parents/guardians of qualifying children to provide medical marijuana medication to their children on school grounds or buses, according to ABC 7 Chicago. Topicals, oils and edibles are all that would be permitted under the legislation. The medicine would have to be administered in a private area.

Lang said, “This legislation could help parents from across Illinois care for their children with severe medical conditions without having to sue their local school districts to do it.”

The Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois Department of Public Health both support the bill.

Following approval of the House, the bill is on its way to the Senate.
