WFAS-FM moving to NYC

I have been hearing about this move for years. I'll believe it when I see it. There is a very strong pirate on 103.9 in the Newark area. Hopefully if WFAS moves it will blast that pirate off the air (or more likely, make them move to another frequency).

Since I'm not a subscriber to that website, can anyone provide a summary of what the rest of the article says?

There's a big party planned for the launch of "Radio 103.9." It's at Sylvia's Harlen Restaurant in Harlem. It's soul food. So, one would think the format will be some kind of urban.

They should do a Old School format like Radio One does with their Urbans. If they go Urban AC they will have a tough time going against BLS with their signal and heritage.

Urban is easily the most overdone format in NY, by 3 full Class Bs no less, I don't see how they have a chance of competing that way...Kiss was already squeezed out. I'm not advocating any particular format, it's tough no matter it is, but it's a crowded elevator already, will be interesting.

3 full class B Spanish stations plus 1 rim shot class A

3 full class B Top 40 stations

Maybe this has to do with the ethnic makeup of the market.

The FCC should not have allowed the move. NYC is overrepresented on the FM dial and does not need another FM station when Rockland and Northern Bergen county with their large populations have 0.

The FCC should have at least set some sort of condition that it will only be allowed if an Orange or Dutchess County FM can put a repeater to replace the loss of 103.9 for Rockland.

If not that then contingent on something like buying 106.3 if it was available and moving it to a mountain range along the Hudson River in Rockland to cover both counties properly. The population has doubled in Rockland County but we have significantly less AM/FM radio options now then we did years ago.

I think it's a very unrealistic thing to expect a station a few miles from NYC will choose to ignore the big elephant, and instead focus on the bedroom community. At one time, Newark was the COL for WOR, WABC, Z100, and several more. All have moved.

If you are going to have an FCC then licenses should be assigned based on serving geographic regions adequately. This is a loss for Rockland County and Upper Westchester. The signal was bad enough as it was.

I really do not see the point in the FCC anymore. They do nothing to stop pirates, do nothing to limit ownership rules and do not ensure geographic equal distribution of broadcast licenses. At this point I could care less whether they existed and may as well at this point let whomever puts up the most powerful stick on a frequency for a region win. Maybe we would end up with some local coverage in Rockland County and music formats to fit the demographic.

I'm sure many would agree. It gave up a lot of radio responsibilities 40 years ago. More recently, the FCC has clearly moved on to more lucrative endeavors. And the Congress has created a situation where the FCC has to raise it's own budget through spectrum sales and fees. That makes administrative duties like frequency assignments to be a low priority.

EXACTLY!! Kiss was in the top 8 in nyc. Emmis sold off stations in Arizona and other cities because they were losing money, not in NYC because they made money from the LMA 101.9.

When I visit my sister who lives in the Inwood section of Manhattan I've been able to receive a decent signal of WFAS-FM while in the car. Mind you, it's not the greatest signal but it can be heard. However, on some nights, pirates interfere with the signal.

If they're finally moving the station in it would be interesting how the new signal does in the urban jungle. I would have to think their main market would be the Bronx/upper Manhattan, so it is going to be a format tailored for those residents.

I can pick up a pirate station in Jersey City on 103.9 and well. It plays spanish music.

It has been confirmed and from my close sources that it will indeed be R&B. I dont know if its going to be a mix of old school hip-hop and r&b but Tom Joyner is going to be on that station for sure.

Not sure if it's the same pirate, but I hear a pirate on 103.9 where I live in West Orange and have heard it well to the west of here.

man orange, nj got like 11 pirates  i think that pirate im talking about must be somewhere in union city.

the pirate on 103.9 is very strong. It comes in well in Brooklyn and midtown Manhattan as well. I would assume WFAS will have to get on the FCC to close them down or they will be difficult to hear even with their move to the Bronx.
