GRAPEVINE — The Mid-South Ruminant Nutrition Conference will be held Aug. 17-18 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 2401 Bass Pro Drive in Grapevine.
The program is presented by the Texas Animal Nutrition Council and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in cooperation with various cattle and dairy industry groups, associations and businesses.
“These conferences provide an opportunity to learn about the most recent developments in ruminant nutrition from some of the nation’s foremost experts,” said Dr. Ellen Jordan, AgriLife Extension dairy specialist based in Dallas and one of the conference planners.
Jordan said this conference consistently draws more than a hundred people from the dairy industry and associated businesses and organizations across the U.S.
“The conference will provide attendees with important information on the future of the dairy industry and the technologies and management practices to help ensure adequate milk supplies for a growing global population,” Jordan said.
Conference programming has been approved for seven continuing education units from the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. The Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiner has approved the conference for 6.5 continuing education units.
The Aug. 17 conference program will be from noon-5 p.m., with lunch, which is included in the registration cost, from noon-1 p.m. Afternoon topics and presenters will be:
— New Concepts in Dry and Fresh Cow Management, Dr. Tom Overton, professor, department of animal science, Cornell University.
— Trace Mineral Diagnostics, Dr. Jeff Hall, professor, Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, Utah State University.
— Dairy Feeders: Gateway to Better Program Performance, expert panel.
— Update on Regional AgriLife Extension Research, Jordan.
Presentations will be followed by a reception and hospitality hour.
The Aug. 18 program will be from 8:30 a.m.-noon. For those staying at the hotel, breakfast will be from 7-7:30 a.m., then a Texas Animal Nutrition Council meeting will be held from 7:30-8:30 a.m. The morning’s topics and presenters will be:
— Understanding and Optimizing the Jungle of Bypass Fats, Dr. Kevin Harvatine, associate professor of nutritional physiology, Penn State University.
— Lessons in Feeding Dairy Cattle from Winter Storm Goliath, expert panel.
— Current Outlook for Veterinary Feed Directive, Dr. Chris Ashworth, dairy technical consultant, Elanco.

The conference registration is $175 per Texas Animal Nutrition Council member and $250 per non-member. Member registration is $150 and non-member registration is $225 prior to Aug. 1. There are no group rates. TANC membership is $75.
