Black is the new black

Sandra ArgeseThe West Australian

Call it art or pure design brilliance, there’s no denying many homeowners are turning to the magic of monochrome to transform their understated bathrooms into a feature space.

According to the Housing Industry Association’s (HIA) 2017 Kitchens and Bathrooms Report, some estimated 219,000 bathroom renovations took place across Australia in the last financial year, with an average $17,000 spent on each renovation.

Among these, a prominent trend making a comeback in the bathroom space is the colour black. From classic to contemporary, it has the power to heighten a once average space to a real talking point in the home.

Speaking to New Homes, Steadman Homes General Manager Jake Steadman said it was a trend he had certainly noticed.

“Since the early 2000s, trends in home design, with bathrooms in particular, have moved towards a blank slate with lots of white and lighter coloured finishes of all varieties becoming very popular,” Mr Steadman said.

“Sleek chrome fixtures and fittings add some mild contrast to these clean spaces.

“In recent times, people are looking for something different, and the use of black as a high contrast feature in a previously washed out space is a great way to achieve a more significant pop. “An eye-catching feature can be created with something as simple as a black basin spout or shower rose selection.”

Mr Steadman said with a limited budget, simple inclusions such as tapware had the power to generate enormous visual impact and bring balance.

“With a larger budget available, the sky is the limit and custom baths, shower screens and feature tiling can create a beautiful and dramatic effect that many clients desire,” he said.

The ideal choice for monochromatic bathrooms, black is also suitable to several other colour palettes and has the capacity to either stand out or blend in.

“In this busy era, bathrooms are now acknowledged as one of the remaining private sanctuaries and an area people are now happy to spend money to achieve a luxury feel,” Mr Steadman said.

“Dark wall and floor tiles really change the look and feel of a bathroom compared to basic white.

“The choice of black in bathrooms extends to all demographics. A wide variety of options are now available within the market.

“It is possible to use black accents in the most basic bathroom through to more boutique homes, such as our Steadman Homes and elite luxury homes such as our Signature Custom Homes.

“From retro black and white chequered kitchen floor tiles all the way to modern black commercial windows frames, black has gained popularity and is here to stay.”
