Manchester TimeQuake Steampunk Festival – details announced for massive Steampunk Expo

TimeQuake Steampunk Festival

Details of the first TimeQuake Steampunk Festival, taking place in Manchester on 30th March 2018, have been announced.

The event is the brainchild of the Victorian Steampunk Society, who are teaming up with Manchester’s Bowlers Exhibition Centre and the organisers of For the Love of Sci Fi, which has a reputation for breaking the mould on comic cons with huge replica props, sets and amazing guests.

The V.S.S. are the creators of Weekend at the Asylum, the world’s largest steampunk festival where a city becomes steampunk for four days, who also have a decade of experience in running hotel-based events, events in parks, museums, clubs and bars and even taking over holiday camps. They’ve also brought steampunk to more than 50 comic cons in the form of art exhibitions, stages and activities.

For TimeQuake, they’ve developed something new – a steampunk Expo.

The TimeQuake Steampunk Festival will offer scores of traders with steampunk and geeky goodies, exhibitions of steampunk artwork and costumes, full scale props and set builds, all under one roof. On stage and various talk areas, expect guest speakers and performers, plus interactive features and presentations – all you’d expect from any great event.

TimeQuake will be hosting an exhibition by the Rowland Emmet society as part of the Expo. For the first time in the North West some of these amazing machines will be on show - inspiration for thousands of steampunks. Centrepiece will be the Featherstone Flyer but they will also be exhibiting four machines originally built for the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. A totally unique opportunity at a convention. TimeQuake will include special zones, focusing on different aspects of anachronistic geekery as well as offering a main generic steampunk zone – look out for dieselpunk and atompunk zones for those who like to draw on later influences but on a larger scale you will be able to explore a post apocalypse zone – where a dystopian future awaits.

Whether you are a fan of Fallout or Mad Max or just concerned about the rise of the Walking Dead, this is an area where the end of the world is not the end of fun.

The Wild, Wild, West was one of the ground breaking TV series and later movies to inform steampunk as a genre and aesthetic with Westworld also inspiring many. TimeQuake’s Western Zone awaits.

Finally, there’s the Wizarding Zone with its reconstructed Groundskeeper’s Hut – a great area for those who like their steampunk to include magic.

Like all the best steampunk events, TimeQuake will also offers several evening features -separate ticketed features, opening on Friday evening with a “Landing Party” with SteamWars – offering the opportunity for some Star Wars and steampunk mash up costume fun.

On Saturday evening there’s to be a Cataclysm Ball, where the temporal flow will be disrupted and time irreversibly changed. This is a ball at the end of time with a decidedly punky and edgy feel. Bandits and ne’erdowells rubbing shoulders with the well heeled seeking adventure and excitement. Dress to impress for an evening of live music and immersive entertainments where imagination is King.

It all sounds tremendous fun, and with two day weekend passes now on sale (with scope to expand over the four day weekend), you should have every opportunity to explore all of the areas and enjoy everything the event has to offer… including the chance to wear different outfits and themes over the course of the show.

“Steampunk is inherently creative and inclusive so even if there is not a zone especially for you don’t think you are unwelcome,” say the organisers. “The more creativity and imagination the better so if you like your style to be lacepunk or pirates or even a twist of samurai or aliens come along and enjoy an event where the audience looks as spectacular as the performers.

“TimeQuake is set to become one of the main steampunk events in the UK, if not the world. Don’t miss being at TimeQuake1!”

Note that there may not be tickets available on the day. This will be totally subject to advance sale numbers. The V.S.S. will make this clear just before the event.
