Fort Lauderdale stores can sell booze Sunday morning

Just in time for the start of the NFL season, shoppers will be able to buy alcohol on Sunday mornings at liquor, grocery and convenience stores in the city.

City commissioners gave final approval Wednesday to a new law treating Sunday like any other day of the week, allowing stores to sell alcohol from 7 a.m. until midnight.

Prior to Wednesday’s action, stores had to wait until noon Sunday to sell beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages. Officials said the change takes effect immediately.

That means Sunday-morning shoppers won’t have to make an extra trip to buy booze. And city retailers won’t lose business to stores in surrounding cities that don’t have a ban.

The city had been one of the few remaining local holdouts of so-called “Blue Laws.” In 2011, the city started allowing liquor to be served at restaurants and hotels on Sunday mornings, but had kept the ban in place for stores.
