As an airline pilot whose destinations included Beirut, Damascus and Amman, Jim Termini knew about lapses in airport security.

“I’d seen security all over the world,” Termini said. “Some of it was good, but some of it was really bad.”

He and his friend Paul Mason set up Redline Aviation Security in 2007, determined to raise the standards of airport staff responsible for detecting security threats. “Paul and I wanted to deliver the same quality and safety that we had been used to as army pilots,” Termini said.

“Neither of us had anything to spend, so we borrowed £3,000 from my grandmother’s funeral fund to get the business off the ground,” he added.
