TRENTON — Two men were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds yesterday afternoon after a shooting on Garfield Avenue, police said.

One man was hit in the hand and one in the leg, Trenton Police Director Ralph Rivera said. Both went to St. Francis Medical Center, one by ambulance and one by private vehicle, Rivera said.

According to a neighbor, the men were playing cards on their porch when shots rang out on the 400 block around 4:30 p.m. The men ran between two homes toward the backyard to avoid the gunfire; witnesses said they saw a black SUV speed away toward Farragut Avenue.

Twelve cones marking bullet casings were scattered in the street in front of seven neighboring homes on Garfield Avenue later in the afternoon. It is unclear whether it was a drive-by shooting, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.

Residents said it was the second shooting in the neighborhood in as many weeks.
