July 7, 2016: Tribute to Noel Neill - The Original Lois Lane

by Chris Brockow

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Noel Neill, the screen's first Lois Lane has passed at the age of 95.

Growing up in the later 1960's and 1970's, I was diagnosed with Juvenal Diabetes. I was in and out of the hospital from the age of 3 to 16. The TV was my best friend and I believe the very first show I ever saw was "The Adventures of Superman" starring George Reeves. That show stuck with me even to this day.

As I got older, I started to know about the actors and actresses; one of which was Noel. She was my first screen crush and all my life I wanted to meet her.

In 2005, my wish came true when my wife Helen and I first met Noel at the annual Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL. She was so nice and sweet.

Over the years of going to Metropolis, she became a friend to us. I live in Marlton, NJ and she and Larry Ward - her dear friend and personal biographer - were in New York in 2007. We were going to see them but I was in the hospital a few days before they came. I think I e-mailed Larry and told him we might not make it.

Thankfully, I was released a day before the convention and when we walked in the room, Larry and Noel yelled, "Chris, Helen, you made it!".

At that same convention I told Noel that all my life I wanted to meet her, I never thought I would be friends with her. I also told her my next goal was to be part of the Superman Family. Noel put her arm around me and said, "Chris, you already are."

A year later, Noel and Larry were in Parsippany, NJ for the Chiller Convention. Again, they were happy to see us. Noel was so gracious, she allowed me to sit with her at her table and we had a truly "Super" conversation.

At one of the Superman Celebrations, the festival hosted a 1940's ball for Noel and it was a wonderful night. Larry and Noel had the first dance. When I asked her to dance she said she was tired and maybe later.

Noel was one of the main reasons why I liked going to Metropolis, IL every year for the annual Superman Celebration. She made everyone feel special and I know everyone who has met and knew her has many, many stories to tell and these were mine.

You are going to be missed Noel. Thank you for making this fan a friend of yours.
