1.14.20 | General

PHILADELPHIA – Another semester in the books, another record set by the Temple University student-athletes.  This time it was for perfect grade point averages as 40 Owls posted a 4.0 semester GPA for the 2019 fall semester.

Overall, Temple student-athletes combined for a 3.22 semester grade point average, marking the third straight semester with over a 3.20 combined GPA, while being enrolled in 88 different academic majors. It is also the second highest semester grade point average on record (dating back to 2008) and the 16th straight semester grade point average above a 3.00.

"Nothing makes me prouder than talking about the incredible accomplishments by our hard-working student-athletes," said Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft. "Our young men and women put in a tremendous amount of work in the classroom and I congratulate them for their academic success.  I also applaud our coaches and our exceptional academic support staff led by Justin Miller. We have created a winning formula for academic success here at Temple, and it shows by these magnificent results."

Sixty-six percent of Temple student-athletes earned a 3.0+ GPA during the fall semester, marking the 17th consecutive semester that the Owls topped the 50 percent threshold.  The 66 percent is also the second highest percentage for a fall semester.

Seventeen of Temple's 19 varsity sports posted a combined semester GPA above a 3.00 led by men's and women's cross country, which earned combined GPAs of 3.47 and 3.61, respectively.  Additionally, four programs – men's basketball, men's crew, fencing and women's gymnastics – earned their highest semester GPAs on record.

Overall, 18 programs have a cumulative GPA of better than 3.0, led by women's cross country (3.75) and men's cross country (3.56).  Six teams (men's basketball, men's crew, women's cross country, fencing, women's gymnastics and volleyball) earned their highest cumulative GPA through the Fall 2019 semester.
