This is an opinion tribute cartoon.
Former Alabama Rep. Alvin Holmes, one of this state’s most colorful characters, dropped the mic for the final time over the weekend. The civil rights advocate from Montgomery was a frustration to his adversaries and a loyal watchdog for his constituents for a record 44 years in the state legislature. Behind a microphone, Holmes was an entertaining political performance artist with a knack for outlandish, often comical remarks.
Holmes could be a nightmare for his opponents. He could be a cartoonist’s dream. But he was always a relentless fighter for his people.
Rest in peace, Alvin Holmes. You left it all out on the field.
