On Saturday, 180 people in an underserved community received their first vaccine dose.
The UPMC Community Cares team immunized residents of the Jackson and Lick Towers, a part of Harrisburg’s public housing program.
"We have seen, in communities of color, people dying at very high rates,” said Tina Nixon, who serves as vice president of mission effectiveness and chief diversity officer for UPMC Pinnacle. “So we want to make sure that we are going out in the community and making sure those who may not have access to the vaccine get access."
And while second doses have been hard to come by following a mishap at the Department of Health, these residents will receive their second vaccine doses in just a few weeks.
