At 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, the zombie apocalypse began.

About 30 members of UF improv comedy troupe Theatre Strike Force conducted a flash mob throughout campus pretending to be a horde of zombies.

The group wore face paint and tattered clothes as members moaned and shambled among the many surprised students.

The mob began in the Reitz Union food court, traveled across the North Lawn, through the Hub and Turlington Plaza and finally ended at the steps of Library West.

Skyler Kern, vice president of TSF and telecommunications junior, organized the mob. Kern, the only human in the mob, was chased by the horde until devoured outside Library West.

The flash mob was inspired by the UF Emergency Zombie Plan that appeared on e-Learning and was taken down earlier this month, according to Kern.

The plan was a tongue-in-cheek look at how UF should react to a zombie attack, he said.

It was written by an e-Learning Support Services staff member, where it was posted before gaining national coverage and being taken down.

"What would the campus do without the zombie plan?" said Kern, adding that the mob was organized to show support for the return of the plan to e-Learning.

The mob drew attention from students, some of whom stopped to take pictures and video on their cell phones and a few even followed the horde until its conclusion, a reaction that was much appreciated by Kern and the other members.

At almost the same time the mob began, UF tested its emergency UFAlert system, which is supposed to notify all students in case of a dire emergency or threat. The coincidence was not lost on TSF.
