In the A-Z of Marketing J & K are for …

Hi <<First Name>>,

Last month’s Scribbles had the highest number of unsubscribes ever! One of my clients judges the success of his email newsletter on the number of people unsubscribing – the more people who leave his mailing list, the more successful his newsletter has been, he says. I’ve decided to take his approach, which means that the April issue of Scribbles was my most successful ever!

I wonder if too many people didn’t like the fact that I wrote about using humour in your marketing in the last issue. Since this issue talks about using jokes in your marketing, I wonder how ‘successful’ this one will be ...

Best wishes,

Chantal

In the A-Z of Marketing J & K are for …

J is for Jokes

I wrote recently about how you can bring humour and personality to your marketing. They will help you to stand out from the crowd of other businesses that do exactly what you do. If you can bring a smile to the face of one of your prospects, as they struggle to deal with a tricky situation, they will be more likely to call you and ask for your help in solving that problem.

When Captain Cook and his crew first landed in Australia, they saw what we now call Kangaroos but didn’t know what they were. They asked the Aborigines they met, who said “Kangaroo” so they called the animals Kangaroos. It wasn’t until much later that they discovered that ‘Kangaroo’ actually means “I don’t know.” Is this true or a bit of a joke?

K is for Knowledge

If you’ve read even just a few of my blogs and newsletters, you’ll know that I believe that sharing your expertise is a great way to promote your business and grow your reputation. Effective marketing is not about selling your services or about telling people what makes you so great. Successful marketing is about sharing your knowledge. Click here if you want to know more about becoming an expert in your field and how to build your reputation through generosity.

In case you haven’t yet worked it out, the next issue will be about L and M – ladybirds and monkeys – or something more useful for your marketing.

Who is JK?

There are a couple of JKs who I can think of, who get their marketing right.

The first is JK Rowling, author of the massively successful Harry Potter books. There are films, merchandise, studio tours and rides that will help you to part with your money. Even if you’ve never read any of the books (I haven’t!) you can still experience the world of Harry and his friends. And it’s all carefully and strategically planned out.

The second is JK, the lead singer of Jamiroquai. Their marketing is pretty cool. Take a look at their website at Jamiroquai.co.uk which is updated on a regular basis and gives you a really good idea – and sound – of what they do. They are generous with the music you can listen to directly from the site, really demonstrating to potential clients (fans) what they do (and what they sound like.)

If you need strategic direction for your business, then you might like to come to the Sales & Marketing Bootcamp that we’re running on 13 July 2018, in Birmingham. It’s being hosted by the PSA (the Professional Speaking Association) and is aimed at people who want to earn money from speaking in public. It is also ideal for Coaches, Consultants, Trainers and anyone else who runs a service business. Click here to book your place now so that you don’t miss out.
