Cycling for STEM: IT’S ABOUT TIME® On Board As a Leading Sponsor For Spokes 2014 STEM Cross Country Learning Tour
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 10, 2014 -- IT’S ABOUT TIME® (IAT) has joined the ranks of sponsors including IAC, Texas Instruments, Teach for America, MIT and the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) to support Spokes America 2014 — an education, non-profit organization launched by college students in 2013 with the goal of teaching children the sciences using creative, interactive learning techniques such as Project-Based Learning.
The Spokes team, comprised of 7 STEM students from Harvard, MIT and Columbia University, will bike cross country (from Oakland, CA, to Washington, DC), stopping at 15 schools along the way to hold Learning Festivals with teachers and students. Each Learning Festival will include a series of classes teaching students STEM subjects using hands-on, project-based methods.
Classes include: Electronics 101, Algorithmic Thinking, Environmental Design, The Magic of Math, Captains of Industry: Manufacturing and Doubletake: Estimation Physics.
Now in its second year, the goal of Spokes America is to help people “rethink education” and to bring innovative teaching methods in the sciences to underserved communities. Says Sam Green (Harvard class of 2017 student majoring in Applied Math & Computer Science and Fundraising & Media Officer at Spokes):
“The 2014 Spokes America team is grateful and excited to work with IT’S ABOUT TIME® as we cross the United States this summer. With IAT's generous support, our mission of bringing STEM to underserved students through project-based learning and attracting attention to the great need for expanded STEM education in the United States will surely be a success.”
For Laurie Kreindler (co-Founder & Managing Partner of IT’S ABOUT TIME®) sponsoring Spokes and their dedication to STEM education was a natural fit for IAT. Notes Kreindler:
“As a leading provider of resources and technology to support the implementation of a successful STEM curriculum in schools across the country, we are delighted to be a part of Spokes 2014—a movement that is trying to shake up the education system, inspire much-needed changes to how we teach STEM and change how we think about learning to provide America with the next generation of STEM professionals.”
