FRANKFORD (WPVI) -- It's been over two years since a man was brutally gunned down in Philadelphia's Frankford section. Now his sister is coming to you for help.
Eileen Horn tells us, "He was a very good artist ... he could do anything wood working. If you needed anything, you just had to call him and he was right there for you. He was very family oriented, everything was family."
Horn says her brother Gerard Markert stopped at nothing to do what was right. And she believes that may have cost him his life.
Late on New Year's Eve 2011 Markert was spending time with relatives along the 4100 block of Orchard Street in the city's Frankford section.
Trouble started when he helped break up an argument between his cousin and two men who had all been in a minor car accident a short time earlier.
Horn explains, "He heard hollering going on up the street, so he went up and stopped it."
The two men ended up leaving, but Markert's family says they circled the area for about 45 minutes. Just before 1:30 a.m. Markert and his cousin were returning from the store when police say the two men came back and shot Markert.
"One stood behind him, the shooter stood in front of him, the shooter put the gun right to his, close to his chest and shot him in the chest. Then shot him in the neck as he was falling," Horn said.
Markert died at the hospital.
The suspects were seen leaving the scene in a 2010 Ford Edge, painted silver.
The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $1,000 reward and the city of Philadelphia is offering up to $20,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.
You can make an anonymous call to the hotline at 215-546-TIPS or the police tip line at 215-686-TIPS.
Markert's family says it's been too long with no closure.
His sister says, "If anyone had any information it would really help to just give whatever information they have."
