INGLEWOOD – A Los Angeles police officer who’s accused of trying to kill his estranged wife pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder and other charges.

Jose Robert Figueroa, 29, remains jailed in lieu of $2.5 million bail while awaiting his next appearance Monday in an Inglewood courtroom on one felony count each of attempted murder, injuring a spouse and criminal threats.

Figueroa is accused of going to his estranged wife’s apartment in Inglewood on May 18, threatening to kill her and choking her until she passed out, according to Deputy District Attorney Sam Ahmadpour.

The woman was tied up when she awoke, according to the prosecutor.

Figueroa was arrested the next day by the Inglewood Police Department.

Figueroa, who was assigned to the LAPD’s Newton Station, was been assigned to home duty, pending further investigation, LAPD Officer Wendy Reyes said following his arrest.

If convicted as charged, he could face a life prison sentence, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
