The 11 Best Movies to Watch This Summer

Originally, this superhero blockbuster was set for a May release in the U.S. but Marvel moved its premiere date up, which basically means summer starts in April now, okay? Captain America, Black Panther, the Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man, and more of your superpowered faves will unite against Thanos in an epic battle. And good news—we'll be visiting Wakanda again in this installment of the Avengers story.

NSFW alert! Smartass superhero Deadpool, a.k.a. Wade Wilson, finds himself with a new crisis on his hands when a terrifying new enemy, Cable (Josh Brolin—who also plays Thanos in the Avengers films), appears on the scene, in pursuit of a scared young mutant. With the franchise's infamous R-rating, it's certain that many f*cks will be given—and said.

Saoirse Ronan switches gears from her award-winning role in Lady Bird for this moody adaptation of an Ian McEwan novella set in the 1960s. The titular beach is the location for a young English couple's honeymoon but despite the heady sweetness of their courtship, Florence and Edward's first night together becomes laden with fear and anxiety—not least due to the pressures on women to be yielding, unquestioning wives.

Khaleesi meets Calrissian in this new story from the Star Wars world(s). Emilia Clarke takes a role in the young Han Solo's (Alden Ehrenreich) formative years, as does Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian. Learn just how the daring young pilot got his stripes when the film hits theaters on May 25.

The only reason not to see this movie, probably, would be if you can't handle the mega-greatness of seeing Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter all in one movie together. See it with your best girls and scheme together afterwards.

Don't take mom to see this one. Toni Collette stars in a freaky horror film about a girl whose grandma's love (obsession?) for her seems to continue from beyond the grave. And not in the good, guardian-angel way—in the "random people smash their heads in around you" way. Not for the squeamish, or the family-ish.

While it's astonishing that anybody is still going to this theme park (come on, people! Dinos are dangerous), the movies, at least, have no trouble bringing in audiences. This time around, a volcano threatens all the prehistoric creatures remaining on the island, and Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) want to save them from extinction yet again. Doesn't seem like a good idea, but I'm sure it'll be fine with some popcorn in hand.

You'll be able to stop thinking "My, my, just how much I've missed ya!" when the sequel to this ABBA musical movie arrives—or maybe you'll never be able to stop. Maybe that's a good thing; the success of this sweet, warm family drama just proves ABBA is the GOAT. In Mamma Mia 2, Sophie's pregnant, and her worries lead her back to mom Donna (Meryl Streep); in flashbacks, we'll find out everything that happened when Donna got pregnant herself.

Hate to make you cry in the sunshine, but Disney's forthcoming live-action Winnie the Pooh movie will likely do just that. A grown-up Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) laments the miserable mess his life has become—and who should come to help him sort that out but his cuddly bear friend?

Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon should seriously think about forming a comedy duo, because I have a feeling that seeing these leading ladies tear it up in The Spy Who Dumped Me just won't be enough. The two play Audrey and Morgan, BFFs drawn into the espionage game after they discover Audrey's ex (Justin Theroux) was a CIA man. Outlander fans will be thrilled to see Sam Heughan on the silver screen in this one too.

Kevin Kwan's hit books about (very) high Singapore society will come to life this summer. Constance Wu plays Rachel, an Asian-American woman who discovers that her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) is crazy rich when they venture to his homeland for his best friend's wedding. With an all-Asian cast, fashion porn for days, and gossipy romantic drama to boot, this one's going to be a blast.
