A SOUTH Wales culture hotspot is encouraging users to get on their bikes.

Chapter Arts Centre, in Cardiff, has installed 17 double bike stands at the new building as part of its £3.8m revamp.

The new stands, which hold 34 bikes, are at the front of the venue and will hopefully encourage visitors to arrive on two wheels rather than four.

Director of the Canton arts centre, Janek Alexander, said: “Sustainability has always been important to Chapter and we pride ourselves on making our carbon footprint as low as possible.

“We’re hoping visitors will choose to take their bikes when they visit rather than the car.”

Chapter has also has teamed up with Cardiff Cycle Couriers to increase awareness of the benefits of green transport.

Over the past month 15 couriers have been sporting Chapter signs on their backpacks while they cycle through the city – an initiative which will be re-introduced during the forthcoming Christmas period.

Director of Cardiff Cycle Couriers John Higgins added: “Chapter has been a client of ours since we started in 2004 and it’s great not only to promote its new facility but also as promote cycling as an alternative form of transport.

“Chapter’s advert will cover 80 miles a day with our couriers and will reach all areas of Cardiff from St Mellons to Penarth.”

Chapter will officially relaunch its new facilities on November 24.
