Road Safety Top Of Mind As Kids Go Back To School

As little ones prepare to return to the classroom next week, London police are asking parents to talk to their kids about the rules of the road.

Streets will instantly become busier than they have been the past two months as school buses return to the streets Tuesday. Children who live close enough to their school to walk or cycle will also be treking across roads.

"Parents and guardians should talk to their children to ensure that they know the rules of the road and their obligations as pedestrians in keeping themselves safe," said Sgt. Amanda Pfeffer, in a news release issued Friday. "Failing to plan for the safe return to school and failing to discuss safety measures may result in tragedy."

Kids walking or cycling to school are reminded to stop, look, and listen for vehicle to ensure the street is clear before crossing, obey crossing guards, and use the buddy system when possible.

Police are also reminding motorists many school zones in the city have a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h and new pedestrian crossovers have been installed.

Driver who fail to stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing could be fined $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points.

For a smoother start to the school year, police recommend motorists and parents allow some extra time to get where they are going on Tuesday.
