The Chamber found itself in need of IT Services due to the leadership transition.  Being that Burgess Technology Services (BTS) are Members of the Damarscotta Region Chamber of Commerce, we reached out to them for assistance.

Doing business with BTS has been an absolute pleasure! Customer service and integrity seem to be second nature for this company.

President, Mike Dorr, began as a network engineer at Burgess Computer in 1998. In 2003, Mike served as the IT Director at Five County Credit Union. In 2006, he joined Matt Rice & Jeanne Stanton to purchase Burgess. Mike focuses on delivering IT solutions that make sense. He values hard work, honesty & integrity.

In speaking with Mike, his highest priority is the integrity and happiness of his employees.

BTS has helped the Chamber with multiple options for IT and hosting assistance.  The price was comparable to other IT and hosting businesses. Service and integrity will keep the Chamber loyal to BTS.

CLC YMCA Youth Board Members Recognized for Volunteerism

The Central Lincoln County YMCA is proud to recognize Brie Wajer and Evan Eckel, youth board members from 2015-2017, for their recent awards for volunteerism.
The Lincoln Academy students were nominated by the local Masonic Lodge, Alna-Anchor Lodge #43, and the YMCA and recognized at the March 26 Maine Red Claws youth volunteer recognition game, where they were each presented with a service certificate and Maine Volunteer Service medallion.
The Maine Masons and Maine Commission for Community Service recognize volunteers, age 18 or younger, who devote 50 hours or more of documented service to the community. The program, Young Maine Volunteer Roll of Honor, shows appreciation and encouragement to volunteers 18 years of age and younger. Maine youth are volunteering at a rate that has earned the state recognition in national reports. The event is held to honor youth who are serving and changing their communities.
In addition to other community service projects, Brie and Evan each have completed more than 50 hours at the CLC YMCA. As President of the Y Teen Leaders Club, Brie has been instrumental in "motivating and leading her student and adult peers in carrying out our mission of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility," notes Karen-Ann Hagar, Youth and Teen Program Coordinator and Community Outreach Coordinator.
Evan also assists with the Y Teen Leaders Club and co-leads with the middle school Y Teen Leaders Club. He is on the planning committee for the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest event where he has coordinated many student volunteers and been instrumental in having a youth voice on the committee. Evan is currently mentoring one of the Y's newest youth board members to follow in his footsteps, ensuring youth involvement for this nationally recognized event.

"Following the Creative Thread" Chats talk by local artist John Whalley May 16 Nationally noted artist John Whalley will talk about his creative process and share images of his recent work on Tuesday, May 16 at 10 a.m. in Skidompha Library's Porter Meeting Hall. Please allow plenty of time for parking.
Known for his realist paintings, John's subjects are often antique objects - tools, bottles, clocks, oars, musical instruments - that he and his wife purchase at shops and sales. His studio is crammed to the rafters with these objects. The way he composes them in his paintings invites the viewer to imagine the story he - or they - want to tell. John's portraits and landscapes are rendered in exquisite detail.
In his talk, John will take us through artworks from his last three solo exhibitions which include graphite drawings, egg tempera, and oil paintings, and will speak about the creative processes he followed as he made these works. From developing one's technique and deciding on subject matter, to finding a theme for a body of work, the artist can often encounter challenges as well as opportunities in their work. Whalley works in the realist tradition, and as well as explaining about his drawing and painting techniques, he will be sharing some of the ways he arrives at his compositions and follows the creative thread as he moves on to new work.
Whalley is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and makes his home and studio in Damariscotta Mills section of Nobleboro. His work is in the collections of Colby College, Portland and Georgia Museums of Art, The Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas, Delta Airlines, and many private collections. He has offered art classes at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, the New Horizons Youth Ranch in Brazil, and will be teaching a three-day drawing class at the Farnsworth Museum's Olson House this July. Whalley is represented by Greenhut Galleries of Portland and Vose Galleries of Boston.
Chats with Champions is a free community offering from your national award winning Skidompha Library and is sponsored by Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shop. For more information call 563-5513.

Midcoast Conservancy to Hold Invasive Plant ID Workshop
Midcoast Conservancy is offering an Invasive Plant Identification workshop on Thursday, May 25, from 4:30-6:30 pm at its Damariscotta Lake office. This kickoff event for Midcoast Conservancy's invasive plant monitoring and management effort will be led by Hildy Ellis of the Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District. Participants will learn how to ID terrestrial invasive plants that might be found in Midcoast Conservancy's region, and will go over reporting methods and management techniques for controlling existing invasive plant populations. To begin, there will be an indoor discussion at the Midcoast Conservancy lake office at 38 Lake Farm Circle in Jefferson, and then the group will move outdoors to Midcoast Conservancy's Davis Stream Preserve (< 0.5 miles of trail, weather permitting).
There will be volunteer opportunities over the summer to assess the extent of invasive plants on Midcoast Conservancy preserves and begin management, but all are invited to attend, regardless of interest in volunteering. The program is free. To register, go to https://www.midcoastconservancy.org/events/invasive-plant-id-trail-property-stewards/. Bird-friendly Gardening Course at Midcoast Conservancy
Whether you have a small yard or acres of property, you can garden and landscape to entice many of your favorite birds to your home. Jody Telfair will help participants work to create bird-friendly habitat around their homes. Through slides, discussion and handouts, the first of two classes will explore the elements and issues in creating habitat that supports the diverse needs of a variety of bird species, as well as the importance of native plants and insects in developing healthy ecosystems for wildlife.
Between the first and second classes, participants will assess their own property (or a friend or family members if you don't have your own) for bird friendly elements that already exist, as well as for what aspects may be missing. Class members will then bring a plan for at least one aspect of bird friendly gardening on their own property to the second class to share and discuss with follow participants.
The class will meet Thursday June 1st and Thursday June 8th, from 6-8pm, at Midcoast Conservancy, 36 Water Street, in Wiscasset.  To register for the talk, go to https://www.midcoastconservancy.org/events/bird-friendly-gardening-course/ . For more information, go to midcoastconservancy.org, or call (207) 389-5150.

"Safety Packs" for homeless LGBT youths donated by Ripple Initiative to Second Congregational Church
Thanks to a very generous donation of materials from The Ripple Initiative, a nonprofit organization based in Rockland, the Second Congregational Church, UCC in Newcastle is able to provide more of its Safety Packs to queer and transgender youths in the Mid Coast area. That project, jointly initiated in September 2016 by the Second Congregational UCC in Newcastle, Broad Bay Church UCC in Waldoboro, and the Mid Coast Trans Collective, addresses a situation which recently has reached epidemic proportions.
Queer and transgender youth are often rejected or abused by their families and find themselves suddenly with no home or rely on friends to offer them temporary respite until long-term, sustainable solutions can be found. These kids often are in need of basic resources and supplies just to survive.
To help them, the four organizations have been assembling and distributing "Safety Packs" to provide the homeless queer and transgender youth with basic supplies to help them survive in the short- to mid-term and stay in school. The supplies are stored in new- or gently used donated backpacks.
The organizations are hoping the community can help provide some of the necessary supplies, most of which are available locally. The list of items for each Safety Pack, created by homeless and formerly homeless youths, includes:
Large backpacks (rolling bag or duffle); a tiny lock that fits on a backpack zipper; an emergency blanket; a face cloth; a basic first aid kit (bandage strips and "butterfly" bandages in assorted sizes, over-the-counter pain relievers, alcohol wipes, elastic wrap bandages); basic toiletries (travel size toothbrush/toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, comb, nail clipper, hand sanitizer, 18 tampons (they have multiple uses); a roll of toilet paper); #2 pencils and a small pencil sharpener; a box of black pens; a small notepad; and a Reny's or similar gift card.
Donated items do not have to be exact--a close approximation of something hard to find will do just fine. The would-be recipients will deeply appreciate your concern, compassion, and effort to help them.
Items may be dropped off either at the Second Congregational Church's office in Newcastle, or the office of Skidompha Library Executive Director Pam Gormley.
The Ripple Initiative donation included a dozen backpacks with supplies. The Ripple Initiative serves the economically disenfranchised by providing a network clearinghouse for the donation of goods, services, and financial resources. Their aim is to have a "ripple effect," benefiting those whose lives have been impacted by poverty or other tragic circumstances. The Ripple Initiative is holding its first "Rip Tide 5K Walk & Run" on Saturday, July 22 at 8 a.m., rain or shine. For more about that event and this wonderful organization, check their website at www.therippleinitiative.org.
