Outa latest to head to court over state of disaster on power crisis
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse is taking government to court over the national state of disaster in light of the electricity shortage.
Government says the measure will, among other things, cut the red tape in the procurement of additional power.
But OUTA says the declaration by the President was unlawful and irrational as laws already exist to address an energy crisis.
It adds the situation was created by government over a period of 15 years.
The organisations Stephanie Fick says they've turned to the High Court in Pretoria to have the declaration reviewed, set aside and interdict government from further action.
"Years of state capture, mismanagement and a dysfunctional culture are not a rational justification for a national state of disaster.
"The national state of disaster grants extraordinary powers to officials to make far-reaching decisions without parliamentary oversight which is a real concern. It could be used to sing unaffordable contracts."
