Tatler did polling on what people think of their new cover subject, Duchess Meghan

tatler meghan

Do you think it’s a coincidence that Tatler’s November cover is “Meghan: What’s Next?” just days after Tatler finally removed huge chunks of their “Catherine the Great” cover story from May? I don’t actually think that there was some huge conspiracy, a royal tit-for-tat, but who even knows at this point? We already know that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are perfectly willing to sell out the Duke and Duchess of Sussex over anything. But… I also think Tatler is like every other magazine and British publication: they know Meghan sells. She moves copy, good or bad. Which is part of the reason why Tatler’s summary of the cover story is so funny: they’re so desperate to talk about her. She’s been away from Britain for six months and they’re still obsessed with her. It’s crazy.

It’s been exactly a year since the Duchess of Sussex, then still a working member of the Royal Family, was last on the cover of Tatler, and as the old adage goes, a lot can happen in a year.

Back then in 2019, Meghan was chosen to front the 310th Anniversary Special Edition, as the most talked about woman of the day. Tatler conducted an exclusive nationwide poll on the country’s opinions on Meghan and four writers shared their differing takes on the Duchess: Lynn Barber, Afua Hirsch, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Lionel Shriver.

The results of that survey showed that the public was divided over Meghan. Now, as Harry and Meghan have quit the Firm, paid off Frogmore, set up home in California and signed a multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix, we asked the nation again what they thought of the couple in a new survey.*

Following Megixit, the majority of people who expressed an opinion, 68 per cent, agree that Meghan and Harry should have their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex taken away from them. 63 per cent also agree that as a British royal, Meghan should not be commenting on American politics – an interesting finding considering the furore surrounding her and Harry’s decision to film a video urging people to vote in the US elections earlier this week. More than a third of those with a view think that Meghan has political ambitions of her own, with 35 per cent agreeing that Meghan wants to be president of the United States one day.

[From Tatler]

“63 per cent also agree that as a British royal, Meghan should not be commenting on American politics…” I’d be interested in knowing how Tatler’s pollster framed the question, because it absolutely sounds like a push poll. The question should have been “Considering Meghan is an American, do you think it’s fair that she encourages Americans to vote in the American election?” I mean… is Meghan even British? Did her British citizenship come through? I feel like we would have heard about it if it did. Anyway, the Tatler poll has me begging the question: why is Tatler conducting polling on non-working members of the Royal Family? Why do they care about royals who were mostly exiled by a rabid tabloid media AND members of their own family? Shouldn’t Tatler care more about their homegrown Top CEO and her husband’s obsession with the Top CEO’s mummy?

Also: the 35% of British people polled who think that Meghan wants to be POTUS are f–king idiots.

Meghan Markle, the US fiancee of Britain's Prince Harry, attends an Anzac Day dawn service at Hyde Park Corner in London on April 25, 2018. Anzac Day commemorates Australian and New Zealand casualties and veterans of conflicts and marks the anniversary of the landings in the Dardanelles on April 25, 1915 that would signal the start of the Gallipoli Campaign during the First World War.

British press look more and more pathetic.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Add to this, Omid Scobie tweeted that “Former Daily Mail editor” Paul Dacre was just named to be Chairman of Ofcon. That’s the group that takes complaints…and HE is the guy who is Carole Middleton’s BFF (and the guy who was in place for all the phone hacking stories). This is putting the wolf in charge of the hen house.

      • Nic919 says:

Someone posted on twitter that making Dacre in charge of the media watchdog is like putting Andrew in charge of the nonces. (UK slang for pedos)

      • February-Pisces says:

It would be like putting Prince Andrew I charge of Child Services.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

        Agreed.

Seems “insanity rules” IS the rule of the day now.

      • tolly says:

So much for the criticism that Meghan should have filed an ethics complaint instead of suing the Mail. She definitely made the right call!

      • Beach Dreams says:

Yeah, and Charles Moore (former editor of the likes of the Telegraph and the Spectator) might be the next BBC chair and he apparently hates the BBC’s supposed left-wing bias. All I can say is that Harry and Meghan got out of the UK at the right time.

    • Rae says:

As a Brit, I completely agree. It’s dire and it’s not getting better anytime soon.

      • Babz says:

It’s like here in the US, with people being placed in positions in government, or nominated for SCOTUS, that are exactly the wrong people for the spot. I’m sorry it’s happening in the UK, too. The world is going mad…

    • Digital Unicorn says:

As for Dacre – we in the UK should be asking ourselves what dirt he has on Johnson? Am sure he know how many children he actually has.

As for BoJo – the knives are being sharpened for him, expect the UK to have another General Election next year. Keir Starmer is looking like he’s going to be our next PM as the Tories have no chance of winning again.

      • Tia says:

In my opinion, Boris didn’t win the last election, Corbyn lost it. Keir Starmer comes across as somewhat reasonable and has actually held down a proper job unlike Corbyn who was a career politician.

Bumbling BoJo isn’t charming any more when it leads to recordable deaths (the cuts always did but they couldn’t be directly attributed. The Covid deaths can be).

      • CherHorowitz says:

I agree that Keir Starmer is a good choice for Labour and he’s doing well.

But ‘held down a proper job unlike Corbyn’? Corbyn is EXTREMELY popular as MP for his local constituency (which was my constituency for years) and therefore has held the seat since 1983. He is very very involved in the local community and does a lot more to get stuck and help his community than most MPs. Is MP not a ‘proper job’ any more?!

And a ‘career politician’ is someone that is just doing it as a job with no passion. There is swathes of evidence of corbyn protesting apartheid, defying the whip on moral grounds, marching against the iraq war etcetc. Doesn’t sound like a career politician to me.

There are many fair criticisms of Corbyn but these seem like bizarre ones to try and make!

  2. VS says:

I don’t know what’s more pathetic: the british press or the people who provided answers to that survey?

  3. My3cents says:

100% of the people polled (in my living room) said that Meghan would make an excellent president.

    • Loretta says:

      Same in my kitchen

    • Yvette says:

@My3cents … What the Tatler summary doesn’t say is that their sample polling size was 4,174 adults. Surprisingly, I got that information from The Daily Mail, who have evidently reviewed the entire article from the November Tatler edition. So when Tatler says 68% of British people, they’re talking about 68% of the 4,174 people polled for their survery… and then, only those who offered an opinion on the sample survey question.

The DM article title is “Two thirds of Britons think Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should be STRIPPED of their royal titles and the Duchess shouldn’t comment on US politics, Tatler survey reveals.”

  4. HAD says:

As an American living in Britain, Meghan Markle has never come up except to tut-tut how badly she was treated. The royals in general never come up except when they do something boneheaded like drive across the breadth of Scotland to recover from COVID. Now granted, I am in Scotland living in a very academic community, but still. Show your work Tatler because I do not believe you.

    • Rae says:

      Hear hear.

    • Mumbles says:

Yeah it would be interested if “no opinion” was an option in the poll because I suspect that would be the majority or at least plurality of the responses. Also interesting is if it was a reader poll, because the reading population of Tatler is mostly wealthy twits.

      • Amy Too says:

It sounds like it considering they’re including wording like “of those who expressed an opinion…” I’m betting you’re right and a large percentage of respondents were like “no opinion/don’t care either way.”

    • Yvette says:

@HAD … I can’t double post, so please read my comment in number 3 above. Tatler’s article summary does not mention the sample size of their survey.

  5. Amy Bee says:

Kaiser, Meghan’s application to become a British citizen has become null and void because she left the UK.

  6. manda says:

Very curious to read Lionel Shriver’s take on her. I’m sure it’s very bitchy.

    • Bettyrose says:

Why would it be bitchy? I love Shriver’s work. What don’t I know about her?

      • manda says:

she’s just really opinionated and can be harsh. Have you ever heard her comments on cultural appropriation? and she also uses very big words. I’m saying bitchy because I am guessing she is not pro-Meghan. No idea why, it’s just a feeling, maybe because I think I saw she was pro-Brexit

      • Bettyrose says:

Oh wow. Guess I need to read more about her. I wasn’t familiar with her before reading We Need to Talk about Kevin, which is such a great book, a feminist horror story full of warnings against sacrificing too much of yourself to please a self-centered husband. Would’ve thought if she had an opinion at all on Meghan it would be positive. Now I definitely need to know what she has to say about Meghan.

      • manda says:

It might be positive, I just really wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not. The brexit thing surprised me. My husband just told me she was pretty critical of the shutdown at the beginning of the pandemic. She seems libertarian or something like that, she seems a little insufferable. Regardless, I’m curious to see what she says.

    • Why would it be interesting to have another white woman comment on a biracial woman? When we review many of the various white women (especially working in media) who have eagerly commented on Duchess of Sussex, it’s been via a lens of myopia, pettiness, jealousy, entitlement and straight up misogynoir. There are exceptions yes but the
the Miss Anns, Beckys and Karens have made the most noise fueling trolls, bigots and racists.

      I say enough.

  7. Harper says:

When Biden wins, the new narrative will be: Meghan and Harry’s endorsement; How the British royals helped elect the newest American president. Then Piers and company will be convinced that they “interfered” and be frothing at the mouth and screaming for their titles even more.

  8. Mariane says:

lol wont be suprised if they polled daily mail readers. I wonder how the royals feel about Meghan getting daily headlines and articles even thought she has been away from UK for almost 7months. Tatler is desperate for a reaction from sussex team and thinks like the insecure KeenKueen kate she’ll send her lawyers for unflattering articles.
I’m looking forward to seeing omid’s November issue article. His tweet showed how he’s rising above the tabloids attacks.

    • Kalana says:

The press and the Karens care more about Meghan than Andrew and they care more about Omid than Piers Morgan or Dan Wooten. Sounds about white.

      • Shirley Gail says:

well said…”sounds about white” succinct and (is the opposite of pointless…pointfull?). Your comment is pointfull….

  9. MsIam says:

What’s next for Meghan is enjoying her life away from that wretched family and country. Enjoying being with her husband and son without looking over her shoulder to see who “disapproves”. And enjoying putting her abilities to good use without being micromanaged to death.

  10. Myra says:

What this poll tells me is that 68% are racist, 63% are idiots and 35% are absolute morons. Carry on, Tatler.

  11. Becks1 says:

LOL. These people are so obsessed with Meghan. I’m sure, as she sits in her California mansion, maybe relaxing by the gorgeous pool or in the tea house, she cares what a British society magazine is saying about her.

I will add that I saw on twitter that this poll started off with asking if the person had an opinion on Meghan. So I feel like right away it is going to get more negative results, because I feel like a lot of people in Britain don’t really have an opinion or care one way or the other.

    • Sofia says:

“I feel like a lot of people in Britain don’t really have an opinion or care one way or the other.” You’re absolutely right. The average Brit on the street has little to no opinion on not just Meghan but on the rest of the royals too. So this whole “The entire country hates her” is not true because 99% literally do not care

      • Tia says:

Part of the reason she was treated so badly is that the crossover between people who support the Royal family and the ‘I’m not a racist, but…’ types is… not zero.

The non-racist people who would in other circumstances have provided more support either don’t care about the monarchy or actively oppose it. When things got bad towards the end some of those people (both normal people and those who are well known) did try to argue back but Piers Morgan et al were too entrenched.

Speaking of Piers, he’s apparently addressing what he says was Meghan ghosting him after ‘18 months of emailing initiated by her’ *again* in today’s Mail on Sunday along with explaining why he’s a liberal really and why Donald Trump is a good friend and excellent President who has done a lot for LGBT rights (seriously)

  12. Seraphina says:

First, I will be shallow and focus on looks here. SHE LOOKS AWESOME in all these pics. And that cover picture is EVERYTHING. She really is beautiful. She rocks that hat.
And yes, they will continue to want to cover her because because she sells covers, just like her late mother-in-law.

  13. Sofia says:

I would love to know how many were polled and what the demographic of the people who were polled was – people living up North are going to have a different opinion to aristos or to people who live down South. Responses will vary depending on social class, race, education, income, area and even gender.

    • GR says:

@sofia – I was wondering about too. Isn’t Tatler’s readership pretty stuffy and conservative?

      • Sofia says:

It’s readership and magazine contents is absolutely designed for the upper class – which leads back to my point that an aristo and a man living in let’s say, Yorkshire (who is not what Tatler aims for in readership), are most likely going to have 2 different opinions on Meghan.

    • ABritGuest says:

The Independent said it was 4,174 British adults polled and only included those who expressed an opinion when questioned. Britain’s population is about 66 million

If rumours about Paul Dacre being put in charge of Ofcom & Charles Moore (anti BBC, misogynist, Prince Andrew defender) being put in charge of BBC is correct then these are very worrying times in Britain. Essentially total right wing dominance of British media

      • Sofia says:

Is Tatler using the same poll? Because they seem to imply it’s their own poll. (I don’t know anything about this)

And even if it was, I would still love a breakdown of demographics because people are going to have different opinions depending on who they are

      • Thirtynine says:

Abritguest, the Dacre/Moore rumours are not done deals, they are supposed to be applied for and advertised in the ordinary way. But they are both Brexiters and anti-BBC, and it is part of the Johnson/Murdoch media domination plan, along with introducing their own Fox style news channel. Johnson just happened to make Moore a peer 2 months ago. Labor MP’s have spoken out against it. Johnson doesn’t get his own way on everything- he tried to push Chris Grayling in as head of the ISC, and was sabotaged by Tory Lewis supported by Labor, who then released the Russia Report Johnson had sat on for months. I’m hoping neither of these come to pass.

  14. Kalana says:

Are any of the people “giving their take” black women? Did they do polls based on how white Britons feels vs black Britons? I could not care less about what a bunch of white people think about Meghan.

  15. Emily says:

It says the percentages are just “those with an opinion”. My own experience is that most Brits don’t care either way about the royals.

  16. Merricat says:

I might have thought Tatler was more sophisticated than this, but I suppose that Meghan being an American AND black is just too much for the inner ring. This is the problem with inherited wealth, it allows the not-so-bright to imagine they are better than everyone else.

  17. carmen says:

Call me cynical, but looking at the headline on the cover makes me chuckle. “Confidential”? “Omid spills the tea”??? Seriously, this will be nothing more than a rehash of what’s already been reported and of course, regurgitating content from his book.

  18. aquarius64 says:

The point is Meghan sells just like Diana did. The British press knows the Cambs and the rest don’t. And the narrative that narrative that Harry is a little boy lost is equally ridiculous. If Biden wins the presidency and the Sussexes get an invite to the White House imagine the meltdown. It announces to the world RRs, presenters, tabloids have no power outside the UK.

  19. Elizabeth says:

I’m sure Meghan is just spending her days worrying about random polls that probably covered a maximum of 250 total people . . . Oh wait, you know she’s probably too busy running her $100 million or so new deal through Netflix from her gigantic new estate in SUNNY Santa Barbara. Enjoy your grim rain-plagued little North Atlantic chunk of rock.

  20. Oh says:

As if Meghan cares about them and their “polls” LooooL

  21. February-Pisces says:

Paul Dacre being in charge of if OfCom hurts my soul. What’s worrying is the people who don’t mind where the UK is heading. The British media is basically rigged from within and there’s no one the challenge it.
You know what I can’t wait for the day when kate is on the receiving end of the smear campaign, mostly because I would love to see how the ‘karens’ of this world react. The fact is all those people who have fallen for the smear campaign and who trash Meghan are basically supporting a corrupt system which no one wins. The day will come when one of their own is a victim of this corruption. By condoning how Meghan is treated, they are leaving the door open for the day they come for Kate.

They don’t seem to mind one innocent person being torn to shreds, because if made them feel good. Attractive, charismatic, intelligent, hard working Meghan was being punished for bagging a prince, whilst dull dreary plain Jane, lazy kate was rewarded for her basic looks and boring personality. Kate stans seem to support corruption as long as they feel it’s in their favour.

    • bloemheks says:

A large chunk of both US and UK citizens are just hateful in general. They will absolutely eat their own.

  22. Jay says:

Lol to “63 per cent also agree that as a British royal, Meghan should not be commenting on American politics…” oh NOW she’s a British royal, huh?

Interesting that the polling doesn’t seem to include Harry, or did I miss something?

It would probably be more accurate to say they believe “Meghan should not comment.”

  23. Wowgust says:

Actually what Tatler’s doing is strange. Yeah, they removed the big chains in Kate top CEO story like KP and Tatler finally came to an agreement. Then they’re making Meghan cover story (I don’t think it’s the continuation of the smear campaign, Tatler is SOCIAL bible, not Ma Midd’s). But Tatler definetely tease the readers. They had an article about young artists Illustrated by the Rose portrait, the comments were hilarious. But now I see all of the comments are deleted. I can’t really get which side Tatler plays, and if it plays copycat, does it mean that copycat now is accepted by aristos?

    • Sofia says:

They’re not anyone’s team but their own. They’ve had Meghan on the cover same time last year and they’ve had her on the cover the year before that – like people have said above, she sells. This is more so from a financial point of view rather than a continuation of anything.

      • Beach Dreams says:

Yeah, Tatler’s only interest is money. If I had to designate a “side” for them, it would be their aristocratic readership. And they’ve made it clear that Kate and the Middletons are not considered a part of that group.

    • February-Pisces says:

I think Tatler are playing chicken with KP. Posting a pic of rose and that post on the ‘history of royal mistresses’ is their way of teasing KP. They were teasing them in a threatening way, that they will continue to taunt them unless they get what they want. Tatler has so far won this battle and most likely got everything they asked for.

      • Wowgust says:

Yes, that’s my thoughts exactly. The royal mistresses story is also teasing (especially with the Cam grandma on the pic lol). But what I don’t buy is that copycat might be interesting for Tatler public. Tatler is bohemian thing, copycat is not bohemian at all.
Btw under the tweet with rose pic there was an information that rose’s husband playing on the other side and only needed rose for heir. Don’t know if it’s true, but if yes – wasty should be careful.

    • tolly says:

It’s interesting that Tatler seems to be blanking Kate right now–they haven’t covered her recent public appearances, and their story about Hold Still was mostly devoted to the Queen’s statement. (I’m referring to the US-facing version of the site, but they did cover Edward’s beach-cleaning appearance, so they don’t ignore the small stuff.)

  24. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Crikey, they sound frantic. Frantically childish. Maybe they should stick to MPs wives and parenthesized husbands.

  25. Jessica says:

As an American who’s gone through the UK spousal settlement visa process and received permanent residence/”indefinite leave to remain,” I know for certain that Meghan is not a UK citizen at this point. They specifically said they weren’t fast-tracking anything for her and she would be going through the same process everyone else goes through. When she was living in the UK, she was likely there on a five year spousal settlement visa (at the time I got mine, 2011, it was only two years, but the Home Office has subsequently increased it to five). After the five years, she can apply for permanent residence in the UK (what they call “indefinite leave to remain,” where she receives the U.K. equivalent of a green card). After having permanent residence for a certain length of time (I think a year or two but I’m not sure), she can apply for UK citizenship/a British passport.

Since they’ve moved to the U.S., presumably that entire process has been stopped in its tracks, as you can’t be living outside of the U.K. while going through the process. Now they’re probably doing the same process in reverse with Harry, and he’s likely in the U.S. on a spousal visa or some other type of visa that will set him on the path to getting a greed card and citizenship (if U.S. citizenship is what he’s after). The way he said in the video that he can’t YET vote in the U.S. made me think he intends to do so in the future.

Whatever they’re doing, I wish them well, Tatler sucks and I’m sure the framing for these questions was very leading. Meghan is an American citizen. Meghan votes in American elections. Meghan lives in the United States. She is not a working royal, and can do whatever she pleases. Having the titles and being a working royal are not the same thing and having the titles does not dictate how she should live her life given that she’s not a working royal. A lot of people have titles and aren’t working royals and do whatever they please. People continue to want to punish them for no reason at all. Nothing they are doing is remotely tacky or embarrassing to the Crown. Can’t say the same for other members of that family.

  26. Marivic says:

Tatler, together with British media, William and Kate, is so jealous of Meghan’s popularity and self-confidence. They froth in the mouth. They want to see her burn. Sorry try again. She’s strong as steel. Shove your bogus survey in your gut. Throw in the royal titles.

  27. JT says:

I’ve been thinking, do you all think the full article will be a slam against Meghan? Kate’s story on Tatler started off very sugary, but when the entire article was released it was a complete takedown. What if Meghan’s is the same? It looks like the story will be negative, but once the full article drops, it might be mildly positive. I think all of the snark in the beginning will hook people in, and they could totally do an about face and be nice. Meghan has been very chill since they’ve left, and I think if Tatler went the way of the other British tabloids that would be boring. Smearing Meg is getting old, so maybe Tatler might want to take a different track. Plus, you know Tatler wouldn’t mind sticking it to Kate, with a positive article about Meg. They had an article talking about how to glowing skin like a royal and the picture was of Meghan. Then they have Omid being featured, maybe we might be surprised. Hell, Grazia UK has a few article defending H&M. On a shallow note, Meghan looks gorgeous on the cover. I would buy it for that reason alone.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Tatler’s had no problems slamming Meghan in the past and I’m sure this time won’t be any different. Perhaps it won’t be as blatantly sexist/derogatory as that one article making insinuations about American women vs. British women, but it’ll still be mean enough.

      • JT says:

I don’t think it’ll be glowing or anything, just pointing out that they’ve done the bait and switch before. I’m sure they’ll get their barbs in, but that hateful coverage of Meg will only get play in the U.K. I think Tatler is trying to expand their audience a bit, so they might start going against the grain. They have quite a few articles about Meghan which are pretty neutral, like the glowing skin story they have. And if they’re trying to get back at W&K, the society bible being fair towards Meghan will definitely have them blowing a gasket.

  28. cc says:

I question if there was even a poll

  29. RoyalBlue says:

I am tired of the relentless insulting press about Meghan, both subtle and not so subtle. How much more will they beat this woman with a stick. Everyone is upset that she has decided to play the game by her rules and not theirs.

  30. Dora says:

Its no coincidence that they cant leave Meghan and Harry alone. If they were concentrating on hating the black woman and their wayward Prince, they aren’t talking about Prince Andrew who raped under aged girls for years, and it gets the conversation off the 20,000 they paid for the kiddie rapist to attend a golf game, and how theyre still taking care of him, after being outed as a kiddie rapist. It also distract from Prince William banging his neighbors while drooling over his social climbing mother in law. For centuries hating black people has always been a rallying tool to distract. And the fact that Harry, choose the black woman, to protect and defend her from her attackers in true family and media really burns their asses. He has his mother’s strength of convictions, William is a tool.

  31. lanne says:

This is grotesque. Nothing will satisfy these folks but burning Meghan and Archie at the stake. For what crime, exactly? Marrying a prince? She didn’t steal anything, cheat anyone, do harm to anyone. This is the classic abuser “if I can’t have her no one can”. I’m embarrassed for people in the U.K. your media is making you all look like a bunch of unhinged looney racists. Why does no one in the RF see this? The RFs complicity looks terrible here. This is going to hang over anything they do— not just the sussexes leaving, but their awful response to it. I’ll bet every interview they do from this point forward will have “no Sussex questions” riders, which itself will make everyone think of the Sussexes. When the film is made about the Sussexes life, and it will be, the RF will be the villains of the story. No complicit media stories from right wing media will increase their popularity. No one cares about the TAtler turnips. They’re just another bunch of racists with broke down castles instead of broke down trailers.

  32. Tessa says:

Probably Anti Meg bots voted a few times. Social media has gotten out of control with some dislikers of Meghan saying they should be “shunned” and excised from history books.

  33. LittlePenguin says:

Even if she had dreams at one point of being POTUS, I am going to say, with how she was treated as a Princess/Duchess, those died a quick death. Somewhere there is an out of context quote where all she wanted is for a woman to be POTUS and some journalist decided that she was talking about herself.

  34. Bettyrose says:

I think Meghan has the intelligence to be a presidential advisor or cabinet member. But I have long felt and even more so now that presidential candidates should be required to have military and/or diplomatic service and a law degree or close equivalent. She does have diplomatic service experience and could still study law.

  35. lily says:

This poll was done by the same people who did the Karen Kate 5 things survey? Did they ask for opinion about the Yorks and if Andrew should lose all his titles (including the HRH), privileges and pay for his homes? Tatler’s target are the privileged one that live in a bubble in the UK, all white, rich, Tories. Meghan and harry are above all them and thanks god far away.

The run for president narrative is as stupid as naive, but i am impressed is making so much noise. Seriously people think is in her radar? lol and shows us how big is her presence.

They really are building Meghan up as the most powerful woman on the planet. The presidency angle is ridiculous, but it’s interesting that they believe it’s in her wheelhouse. They’re setting Meghan up to be actually powerful, in contrast to the royals symbolic one.

  36. Jaded says:

Nothing but a straw poll and no better than cat pan liner. This nonsense will fall on deaf ears, Meghan and Harry are now living their best years which is the best kind of FU they can give Tatler and the BRF.

  37. Beach Dreams says:

It seems like the British press and the royals have reached a new level of desperation and hostility towards the Sussexes. I think the TIME 100 appearance seriously rattled them, but not for the “too political” excuses being thrown out. They probably honed in on Harry’s casual “I won’t be able to vote in *this* election” comment and saw the writing on the wall. They’ve been seeing it with the move to Montecito and the Netflix deal, but that comment was probably the last straw for them. That’s why they’re going all out and demanding that they give up their titles and that Harry and Archie should be removed from the line of succession.

    • lanne says:

What’s really stupid about that is they are poisoning the well for any possible reconciliation. I could see the royals so fed up with the specter of the Sussexes hanging over everything that they do that they beg them quietly to come back. Charles as we know was counting on Harry being part of his stripped down monarchy. Making the landscape toxic for the Sussexes return only hurts the royals. Especially if it comes to be understood that they were “stripped” of title because they hate having “African blood” mixed with their blue blood. Stripping the Sussexes also leaves the specter of “unstripped” Andy to contend with. And it sets the table for “stripped” Charlotte and Louis if they deviate one inch from royal standards. Cutting off their noses to spite their faces indeed. It would be funny if not for the cost in human relationships. And it confirms for the whole world that the Sussexes were right to leave. Stripping them of their titles would just result in them being called “the former duke and duchess of Sussex” which draws attention to the titles they stripped— for what reason, exactly? And what of other titled non working royals anyway? Can the York sisters conceivably keep their titles if the sussexes lose theirs? What about the ofmichaels of Kent?

  38. Alexxxflt says:

For one, I’d love Meghan as POTUS !!

  39. MF says:

As an American citizen myself, I’d like to kindly ask the British to STFU about Meghan’s civic engagement. She’s not a working Royal, she didn’t live there any more, she doesn’t take their tax dollars, and the US is not their country. So to any Brits who don’t like Meghan’s voting activism: mind your own business!

    • Sofia says:

And as a UK citizen, I literally do not care if Meghan says things about the US election. She no longer takes public money, no longer works for the people/country and is essentially a private citizen.

She should not be beholden to the rules the working royals have because she’s not one anymore.

      • carmen says:

“working royals” – lol, talk about an oxymoron. Meghan’s strong work ethic clearly worked against her in that family.

  40. L4frimaire says:

This whole polling is ridiculous. No one is going to strip the Sussexes titles. There are very clear guidelines on this. They barely use them now and this is just whipped up frenzy from the press, especially since they paid off Frogmore. I really don’t understand people who think Meghan wants to be POTUS. If she had any ambitions in that direction ,the last thing she would have done is marry into the BRF. She had never expressed interest in running for any office and was an expat for 10 years between the UK and Canada.I just don’t understand the ignorance on this. It makes the press over there look stupid and have a very poor handle on politics, both domestic and foreign.

    • cc says:

But I don’t think they want to strip them, they want them to freely give it up. That way, in their thinking, they had no part in the outcome.

  41. Merricat says:

Asking everyone at a cocktail party what they think does not constitute a poll.

  42. Vanessa says:

The British tabloids know that they screwed up about driving Meghan and Harry away with the racist campaign they assumed that Meghan and Harry would just take it . Because all the royal play ball with the British tabloids they will cave and give them access for good press . And Now the two most successful royals are living in America and the British tabloids aren’t getting access they are getting their news after American media

    • cc says:

“The British tabloids know that they screwed up about driving Meghan and Harry away with the racist campaign they assumed that Meghan and Harry would just take it ”

Yup, and not just the British Press, the Royal Family also thought the same. They never expected this outcome.

  43. Molly says:

How sad when the most interesting person they can write about is the same person that left their country due to the abuse she received from them. The British Press is proving to everyone that Meghan and Harry did the right thing by leaving.

  44. Geogia jaffe says:

They chose such a beautiful picture of her for the cover. Just stunning. Gorgeous. Perfect.

  45. Valiantly Varnished says:

    This is utterly pathetic.

  46. Stacy Dresden says:

I admire this remarkable woman more and more each day.

  47. blunt talker says:

I just saw a poll on the British media-it is ranked at the very bottom of all news outlets in Europe. That speaks volumes about the news media in the UK. Don’t look for any Peabody awards or any other journalism prizes for the UK media. They are spending too much time talking about things that don’t directly affect people’s lives in today’s world.

  48. Vicki says:

Tatler has one job – to sell magazines. That means their covers have to attract buyers on the newsstand, and if they’re putting Meghan on the cover, they know that people will still buy it, love her or hate her. It’s a really unusual and striking image as well.
