While Thanksgiving has not even arrived yet, people are already getting out the Christmas decorations. Wreaths are adorning front doors, and Christmas music is slowly being played in stores and coffee shops. It is not difficult to see the rush to begin the Christmas season. Once it arrives, it moves like a speeding train, and there is so much to enjoy about the holiday. While everyone loves to receive presents, one of the best Christmas gifts is the quality time spent with loved ones observing your favorite traditions. If you have a young family, you may not have developed those traditions with your children or maybe you want to try something new. Here are six amazing Christmas traditions you should try this holiday season with your family.

Decorate the Tree

People may be easing into Christmas already, but the holiday has not truly hit your home until your tree has been lit and the ornaments hung. Whether you begin the day after Halloween, Thanksgiving, or even wait until Christmas Eve, decorating the Christmas tree should be an event. May you go and select a live tree every year, or you have had the same artificial one for the past 10 years. The whole family should be involved with different tasks in decorating the tree. While dad fights to untangle all the lights and ensure that each bulb is working, the kids can sort all the ornaments, and mom can fluff the tree and dress it up with the tree skirt. You can truly get into the festivities of hanging up all the ornaments with Christmas music playing in the background and warm cups of cocoa.

Host a Christmas Movie Marathon

Everyone has their favorite Christmas movie, and there are plenty to choose. A great Christmas tradition would be to gather your family and even your friends for a Christmas movie marathon. Pop the popcorn, get out the sodas, and find your favorite blanket as you curl up to watch Christmas classics like The Grinch, A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, and Home Alone.

Give Back This Time of Year

Another great tradition to instill in your children this time of year is to give back to those less fortunate. Whether you go through an organization like Samaritan’s Purse, your church, or a local soup kitchen there are many ways to give back to those in your community. There are plenty of opportunities to feed the hungry as well as donate toys for children who otherwise would have no presents for Christmas. During these moments of service, it is a great time to teach your children how blessed they truly are.

Bake Cookies

This time of year calls for delicious goodies, and there may be nothing more traditional than gathering all around the kitchen to bake cookies. Whether you prefer chocolate chip cookies or simple sugar cookies, it can be a fun time with your little ones. You can bake cookies for movie night or as gifts to give to neighbors. Gather the cookie cutters and colored sprinkles and head to the kitchen.

Go Look At Christmas Lights

While you may love your Christmas decorations, it can be a great activity to all hop in the car for a drive to see Christmas lights around town. It is amazing to see all the personal styles that are all out there. Maybe you will see a Nativity scene and single candles in the windows at one house. Or you may spot the family with every blowup ever made. Maybe you will see Santa or the Grinch sliding down the chimney. Whatever you see, going to look at Christmas lights is a wonderful tradition to do with your family.

Let Everyone Open One Present on Christmas Eve

Excitement is high on Christmas Eve. All the stockings have been hung, the tree is ready, cookies have just come out of the oven for Santa. It can be difficult to go to sleep, but one little tradition the night before Christmas can help. Allow each family member to open one present on Christmas Eve. It helps set the stage for what is to come the next morning. Another tradition that can be combined with opening the Christmas present is that the gift is this year’s set of matching Christmas pajamas.

Whatever your family traditions, enjoy this time of year with your loved ones this Christmas as you celebrate the holiday.
