ANA Announces the ANA-Persyst IDEAS Professional Development Award for Early Career Scholars in the Field of Epilepsy

The American Neurological Association (ANA) continues its commitment to supporting the professional goals of all its members with the newly-established ANA-Persyst IDEAS (Inclusion/Diversity/Equity/Anti-racism/Social Justice) Professional Development Award for early career scholars. The new award, which was announced at ANA2021, the Association’s 146th Annual Meeting, is provided to an individual who identifies as underrepresented in medicine and is an ANA member specializing in the field of epilepsy.

The award is made possible through the generosity of the Persyst Development Corporation, the leading producer of EEG software. Persyst CEO Nicolas Nierenberg commented, “We appreciate launching this productive partnership with ANA so that we can assist people from underrepresented groups in achieving their career goals.”

“The ANA recognizes systemic racism has marred the history of academic neurology and neuroscience, and as an organization, we are committed to becoming a champion of the educational and professional development of all our members,” observed ANA President, Justin C. McArthur, MBBS, MPH, FANA, of Johns Hopkins University. “Awards such as this one, for those working in epilepsy, help support inclusion and diversity in our field.”

According to Dr. McArthur, the ANA-Persyst IDEAS Professional Development Award is intended as a concrete step toward amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups specifically in the epilepsy/EEG field. Candidates may be nominated or self-nominate. The recipient(s) are determined by the ANA IDEAS Awards and Scholarship subcommittee.

The recipient of the award will receive free Annual Meeting registration, up to $2,000 travel and lodging reimbursement to attend the ANA Annual Meeting (when the Annual Meeting is held in-person) and $11,500 for professional development - the use of which is approved by the IDEAS Task Force Awards and Scholarships Workgroup - and a commemorative plaque.
