Carrie Grier Lowe, Pleasant Grove tornado victim

PLEASANT GROVE, Alabama -- Carrie Grier Lowe was always thinking of and helping others, her husband, Josh, said.

She was holding her 10-month-old nephew Jacob when a tornado struck Pleasant Grove and a concrete slab from the porch fell and landed in the basement of her brother's house. Carrie, Josh and Tucker, their 7-week-old son, had gone to Curt and Crystal Grier's house to ride out the storm with them and their two children, Rachel, 5, and Jacob. The seven of them were huddled together with Tucker in his car seat.

Everyone survived but Carrie, who was shielding Jacob. She was 26.

Carrie was always putting others first, Josh said.

Carrie was valedictorian of the Class of 2002 at Minor High School, and she graduated from Samford University in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in nursing. She was an emergency room nurse at St. Vincent's East. Carrie was so excited about being a mother, Josh said.

"She had a wonderful laugh," he said.
