School may be out for summer, but some young students are still learning important lessons outside the classroom.

On Thursday, the American Red Cross hosted a course on emergency preparedness for children attending a YMCA day camp.

Instructors taught participants how to keep themselves and their families’ safe during a fire or hurricane.

Topics addressed included coping strategies and developing an escape plan.

Participants also went home with a pillowcase and were instructed to fill it with emergency supplies.

"They can go home with their pillowcases, make it their own, play a role in their own level of preparedness and go home and share what they learned with others," said Alex Lutz, the Director of the American Red Cross of Greater NY.
