Ann Curry saved from being stranded on hiking trail with a broken ankle by group of resourceful Boy Scouts

NBC journalist Ann Curry has reported from some of the most brutal environments in the country but after a recent hiking crisis she might want to bring some Boy Scouts along the next time she goes to Darfur.

As recounted in Scout Magazine, Bryan Wendell tells the story of how Berkely Heights Scouts found Curry while hiking on a trail in New York's Harriman State Park.

The former Today show co-anchor was stranded with a broken ankle.

'We were hiking along, and we came to a trail intersection,' Scouter Rick Jurgens told Yahoo, 'and a lady was sitting on the ground with her one leg out. We didn’t think anything of it, but one of the guys asked if everything is OK. She said, ‘No, not really. I think I broke my ankle.’ She told us to keep going, but the guys refused.'

Jurgens knew the voice of the NBC anchor but his scouts had no clue they were about to help a famous journalist.

Luckily, a good scout is always prepared.

'We work on these requirements, and here’s an opportunity where it was a true test of all those First Class, Second Class first-aid requirements,' Jurgens said. 'They got to use it and use it for real. And they did an outstanding job.'

But it wasn't quite enough for Curry to get down the trail on her own.

Next, the Scouts 'started running into the woods' and finding wood to combine with a tarp for a makeshift stretcher.

Their craftsmanship worked and they were able to carry her to the trailhead, finding her husband and son waiting.

Curry's family had gone for help, and by the time the Scouts arrived there were already forrest rangers ready to go.

'They asked, ‘Is there somebody up there who needs rescuing?’' Jurgens said. 'And we said, ‘It’s taken care of.''

Now out of the woods, the Scouts drove Curry and her family to a local hospital.

Curry was so grateful she handwrote a letter that was delivered to each scout who aided her rescue.

'I feel enormously lucky you came along at just the right moment, and were so willing to help a stranger in need,' she wrote. 'You are a credit to the Boy Scouts and to your families, and I want you to know I am deeply grateful for your kindness and skill.'

She then tweeted a thanks to her 1.43 million followers.
