Monte Carpegna cycling - description written by alan.rouse, colchester, United Kingdom

Monte Carpegna aka Monte Chippo starts at a right turn in the village and you immediatly hit a sign for 20 % and this more or less defines the climb, which we thought was about 9kms. At times it was difficult to keep the front wheel on the ground, at least most of the ride is through trees, so that you are in the shade. About 2/3 rds up we came to a gate, but you can dismount and walk around this. The road surface was excellent.

Yes, the climb is historic because it was Marco Pantani's go-to training climb route, but the climb is in dense forest, not scenic at all, and too short to be considered epic. Basically a big disappointment not worth the trip unless you are a rabid Il Pirato fan.

Just did it today...

Ok, to make it short: this is the most difficult climb I''ve ever done!

Out of a group of nine good riders, we were only three to reach the Pantani memorial without having to unclick and have a break to recover some sort of breath. The first two kilometers are absolutely horrendous, it''s all about surviving, nothing more. The 20% warning sign doesn''t lie. Thus, I don''t understand why the climb profile on this site doesn''t match with the real steepness of this one... .

Good luck guys!

Monte Carpegna aka Monte Chippo I was lucky enough to climb this hill in September with Walter and Gillian from switzerland. We were on holiday at the Hotel Dory, Riccione and decided to do a private ride. The climb starts at a right turn in the village and you immediatly hit a sign for 20 % and this more or less defines the climb, which we thought was about 9kms. At times it was difficult to keep the front wheel on the ground, at least most of the ride is through trees, so that you are in the shade. About 2/3 rds up we came to a gate, but you can dismount and walk around this. The road surface was excellent, the Giro having passed this way a short time before. The are many references to Pantani on the way up and a huge steel sign at the top, depicting Pantani climbing. The descent was fast, but quite safe, not to technical and no nasty sheer drops. This mountain in no way compares to the big climbs, such as the Galibier, but is steep enough for an old fella like myself and we all enjoyed it very much

Nice climb from the village of Carpegna. Especially the part up to the monument of Pantani (1/3 of the climb) is historic with all kinds of plates of il pirato with cheers. After the monument, the climb continues (you have to lift your bike 2 or 3 times over a fence). Descent also very beautiful!
