Duchess Kate makes her second stop in Cardiff to launch her Early Years survey

I’m not so critical of the Duchess of Cambridge to think that she threw together a “whirlwind 24-hour launch” of her Early Years project at the last minute, as a way to distract from the Sussexit fallout. It’s likely – more than likely – that the plan involved a January launch anyway, and maybe the exact timing was affected by Sussexit, or maybe not. Historically, January has been a quiet month for Kate – and the rest of the royal family – so it is surprising that she would choose to launch Early Years right at this moment, after about 16 months of hype and PR stories about how keen she is about early childhood development and how this is some kind of massive undertaking which has absorbed YEARS of on-the-ground duchessing. And in the end, it’s a five-question survey and only after she’s accumulated the data will she know how to proceed? We’re not supposed to question it, I guess.

So here’s Kate’s second appearance around the Early Years launch. Her first was in Birmingham on Tuesday, with no press and just photos published after the fact. The second event is in Cardiff, Wales and as you can see, Kate was dressed appropriately and conservatively for the appearance. A black turtleneck and an ugly camel coat, frankly. The skirt was cute though – mid-length animal-print.

I also wanted to point out some interesting talking points which have been all over the coverage of this launch:

Run by the Royal Foundation that Kate heads along with husband Prince William, and conducted by Ipsos MORI, the new survey aims to spark what Kate’s office calls a “national conversation on the early years.” She hopes that the results will also guide her future work as she strives to give children the tools and foundations to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

It is the latest development in eight years of work by Princess Kate. In that time she has immersed herself in hearing real-life experiences of children and carers and learning how experiences in early childhood can lie at the root of many of the toughest social challenges people face.

[From People]

She hopes to start a “national conversation”… with a five-question survey. Hours and days and weeks and months and EIGHT YEARS of private meetings have led to this, a crowdsource survey on subjects to which, frankly, most child development experts already know the answers. And now she’s claiming that she spent eight years on this? AND that the results of the survey “will also guide her future work.” Which would be… interesting enough on its own, but here’s the language the Royal Foundation used when describing the Early Years project just three months ago:

Her Royal Highness and The Royal Foundation have brought academics, practitioners and charities together to form a steering group to develop a significant new body of work that will ultimately support all efforts to provide children with the best possible start in life. This has been a major body of work and will be unveiled later this year.

[Via archived CB post]

“This has been a major body of work” and “a significant new body of work.” I mean… why couldn’t they just say “Kate was keen on doing some photo-ops with kids”? Again, I don’t doubt that Kate cares about early childhood development and kids’ mental health and well-being. I know she cares. What I doubt is that Kate was actually paying attention in all of those meetings she allegedly had with experts for eight years.

While I’m glad to see her doing *something*, esp. on her own, this feels like a road well traveled, that she’s not contributing much, if anything, to.

On a positive note, I think her “natural” hair (wavy) looks SO much better than her pageant hair, but a low pony tail would have looked more professional and pulled together. I love the coat! I think her whole look is great today.

“Landmark survey” please send help, I am dead.

OMG, the second hand embarrassment is real.

    • Myra says:

Kate’s initiative makes Melania Trump’s BeBest Initiative look like the The Moon Landing, Newton’s discovery of gravity or Franklin’s experiment on electricity….it’s TERRIBLE. Does the U.K. have a Dept of Education? Does the U.K. really don’t know the answers to the 5 questions Kate’s “landmark” survey wishes to discover. That survey is an EMBARRASSMENT to the U.K. Kate should fire whoever told her this would be a good idea.

      • Yes! to everything you said Myra. Those 5 questions should haunt her for the rest of her professional life. What a sad waste of money and time and knowledgeable experts. As I said in previous post about this launch: Everyone involved in it should be ashamed that this is the result of their — according to KP PR — enormous amount of time and effort.

      • Nic919 says:

The comparison to the Be Best fiasco is apt on so many levels. They are both make work projects for spouses who prefer to shop than actually help those who aren’t rich.

      • BeanieBean says:

I think this was her mother’s idea. The Middletons gave each of their three kids a piece of the business to run ‘on their own’: Pippa got the newsletter, James got the cake kits, Kate got the First Birthdays. Kate likes babies. Mom’s got her going with her strengths. Unfortunately, working isn’t really one of them.

    • anneliser says:

All the academics in the UK are collectively groaning. There is no paucity of research about early childhood in any developed country!

    • Sass says:

For real I read that and cackled.

      Love your username btw.

    • ArtHistorian says:

The language surrounding this little survey is ridiculous. It’s The Emperor’s New Clothes.

  3. Erinn says:

I’m glad that I saw the new hair photos. I’m going through a lot right now (Our office is closing, trying to find a new job before my end date, family illness, just shit hitting the fan in all directions) and I saw a photo of myself from 3 years ago with bangs. They looked GREAT. I had pretty much all but made an appointment with a hairdresser by the end of the day yesterday to get bangs again and to chop a TON of hair off.

But Kate’s bangs situation reminded me of why I grew mine out in the first place, and how much of a pain that was. I HATED styling the stupid things, and they only ever looked really good 1/5 times.

Ultimately, I have reconsidered my decisions haha.

    • Originaltessa says:

I got bangs once. I loved them on the day I left the salon… and then hated them for the next two years as they grew out. Not worth it. Good call not going through with it.

      • Erinn says:

I had them basically all of my life! I grew them out a year or two ago, so 28 was the first year of my life with absolutely no bangs haha.

It really isn’t worth it until they invent some sort of product or device to give you PERFECT bangs in minutes haha. My hair also tends to be relatively wavy if I let it air dry, which meant I was blow drying more than I’d like. And if I wore glasses instead of contacts, they’d start to curl against the frame of the glasses lol.

I’ve told my husband and coworkers that if they hear me talking about bangs to just show me photos of terrible ones!

      • BeanieBean says:

I have a high forehead, so I always wore bangs, at least until high school when I got my first pixie cut.

    • (TheOG)@jan90067 says:

Erinn, get a pair of clip in bangs and play with them. It’s like playing with a friend’s baby: you get the fun, then you get to give them back when before they poop and spit up lol

So sorry hearing about all your stresses. I do hope things turn around for you soon! ❤️. (Love reading your posts btw!)

      • Erinn says:

This is genius advice! I do kind of miss them SOMETIMES, but I realize I only miss them when they were behaving haha. The effort required is not worth it. I have a big forehead so I used to kind of try to hide that, but at some point I just embraced the forehead lol.

The stress is sucky. We’re kind of in limbo because they’re looking to find someone to take over the staff and equipment, so it’s not COMPLETELY dismal. But being in limbo is a different kind of stress. I started talking to a recruiter in the city to try to find me a remote position doing web development, so fingers crossed there. I’m luckier than a lot of people – I can be added to my husbands insurance and he has a very stable job. I’m not worried about losing my home or anything like that, so it could always be MUCH worse. I’ve been mostly positive, but yesterday was just one of those days that everything sort of went wrong (hence the almost-bangs). Today is looking up. Thanks so much for the kindness – I really appreciate everyone on this site. I think we’ve got such a supportive group of posters here, it’s really wonderful. <3

      • (TheOG)@jan90067 says:

Wishing you all the very best, Erinn! Hugs! 🤗

    • Alice says:

I chopped my hair and got bangs too a few months ago. Love them and get lots of compliments but man styling them suuuucks. I prefer to let my hair air dry and the bangs go in two different directions haha.

Sorry about what you’re going through. If you ever want to grab a coffee with a fellow celebitch let me know, i’m also in the valley and always have a pot on.

      • Erinn says:

        <3 Thanks so much, Alice

      • Lady D says:

I’ve had thick bangs as long as I can remember. I too have a large forehead and at @59yo I do not have a single wrinkle on my forehead. (I do have a small line forming between my eyes that appears to be travelling up) The skin is clear smooth and wrinkle free. I cannot say the same for my face, but my forehead looks 20 years younger than the rest of me

      • olive says:

SAME, if i don’t blow dry my bangs with a round brush, they’ll dry in two parts right down the middle and give me dwight schrute hair lol

    • Jaded says:

Sounds like you’re going through a tough time….wishing you the best outcome!

    • Elisa says:

I have bangs and I love them. I simply flat-iron them and they look great – at least in my opinion. 🙂 I have a long bob with the bangs and am super happy with it.

      • Erinn says:

You’re one of the lucky ones! I never FULLY mastered them despite having them almost all my life haha. Some days they looked KILLER. If I could have gotten mine to listen, I might not have grown them out hahah.

    • SK2 says:

      Good work Erinn!
I don’t like tattoos but have said before a little reminder “no fringe” would be good for me
      ( fringe = bangs)

    • Becks1 says:

Aw @Erinn I’m sorry things are tough right now. I hope they get better soon.

Bangs are not for me, I’ve tried, lol.

  4. Sass says:

I don’t care for animal print or that length of skirt esp with knife pleats (I’m not a huge skirt person anyway), but I like how clean the rest of the outfit looks. The buttons are godawful, I know she loves a buttony coat but those look cheap. The camel on black looks nice though. I see she’s taking some cues from Meghan style wise…

  5. Aurora says:

    She looks exhausted.

  6. runcmc says:

I think she actually looks fantastic- I almost never actually like her outfits but this one was stylish and professional … like I could see myself wearing this to work (blazers aren’t common in my workplace)

That said, I am really not trying to shame her but it consistently surprises me how low her body weight is constantly. That must be such a pain to maintain! I wish the royals were a little more transparent because I’d love to know her nutrition/exercise regimen, just for curiosity’s sake. I don’t have her build (I’m built more like the York girls so even when I’m thin I’m not THAT thin- so I’m not looking to emulate it). I’m just curious!

    • Original Jenns says:

I used to be that trim, high school through my 20s. I don’t think it was super natural for me, but I played a ton of sports daily and probably ate too few calories for the amount of activities I was doing (I was also young and eating total garbage because I could lol). Then my 30s hit, and there’s no going back, pretty sure my very bones have shifted! I’d be interested in her regimen too, simply because while she is very trim, she also has muscles built in, so it’s not just diet. I bet she swims, and tennis.

    • minx says:

Same—love the coat, boots, skirt, everything.

      • Gabby says:

Me too, this is a great outfit.
I would have liked to see her hair pulled back in a low pony tail maybe, but otherwise, very good.

      • aria says:

meghan used to wear like this.

      • minx says:

Well, I mean, Meghan wasn’t the first one to wear that look. When I was younger and skinnier I had the long wool coat and slim high heeled boots. It’s pretty classic.

    • notasugarhere says:

She’s SWFing an outfit Meghan wore recently. Turtleneck, gold circle pendant, camel coat, black boots. Now she’s moving from Diana cosplay to Meghan cosplay?

      • raindrop says:

notasugarhere, that was my thought too! She’s dressed like she’s copying a standard Meghan outfit.

      • olive says:

she even managed to find a camel coat covered in buttons!!

      • Liz version 700 says:

I just asked myself the same thing. Great coat looks like something Meghan would wear …. WAIT Meghan did just wear a similar outfit. So now copying the banished Duchess? Yikes.

      • yinyang says:

Yeah, but if Meghan wears it she will be penalized for the costs. White duchess can spend whatever.

    • Elisa says:

I don’t like the coat but love the rest of the outfit and would totally wear it.

    • jj says:

Love her look. I wish I could be that trim/thin too. She has the same metabolism as Angelina Jolie? I use to be that thin when my children were young, I guess it keep me busy.

  7. Cidy says:

I mean, trying to give her the benefit, from what they have said this is the first wave of her project, I think she is trying to do it in phases and this is the first phase. Now, do I think it was the best way? No. It could have been done a lot better but I see her intention, there can be a better way to go about it.

I think they are trying to get some answers so they know what to focus on, which is fine. It just seems underwhelming and could have been thought out better. But I’m not going to poo poo her actually working.

    • anneliser says:

The UK, like the US, has a world-class university system. I’m 100% confident there are experts in early childhood who have done far more in-depth work and can elucidate any answers she needs about barriers to child flourishing and possible solutions.

      • Sass says:

Agree @anneliser. These are questions you ask people in the field to get started. She had EIGHT YEARS to work on this project.

Step one: identify goals – Understanding early childhood development and its ties to mental wellness or illness.

Step two: research team. Take questions Kate has and present them to professionals in these fields – researchers, educators, psychologists, caregivers.

Step three: apply findings to build a platform that can be utilized throughout the commonwealth via a foundation. This could look like something such as a physical space that has resources for families in need, or an outreach program available in preschools and doctors offices alike.

But instead she took step two and made it a cluster.

      • Cidy says:

        @everyone

I agree, I get it. I’m not saying that her project is great or anything like that. And I’m not believing the line that she has been doing it for 8 years, I think my point is that she is rolling it out in phases, and this is what she sees her first phase being.

      • Hope says:

She doesn’t want to apply her findings. Everytime she has to actually put up, she’s going to stall and evade.

The woman doesn’t want to take a stand on anything and she doesn’t want the expectation of actually seeing anything through.

      • Sass says:

@Hope yes that much is obvious but god. How lazy, how utterly lazy. She’s THE FUTURE QUEEN™️, it should be so easy for her to do it. All she has to do is tell other people to get it done, show up for a ribbon ceremony, and visit once a year. Done. But she won’t do it.

    • Amy Too says:

“I think they’re trying to get some answers so they know what to focus on.” Then WTF have they been doing for the past 3 years that she was supposedly working on this? Seriously. I’m completely serious. What were all the behind the scenes meetings about? Why did she need an army of people from different sectors to help her come up with a 5 question survey that will determine the problem, not even the solution!? It took them 3 YEARS to come up with a 5 question survey! And then it will be another year or 2 to collect and analyze the data. And then another year or 2 to figure out what to do with it and how to affect change where it’s needed. This survey is not a big roll out type of event. This should’ve gone out years ago at the very beginning of her Early Years initiative work and then the launch should’ve been her implementing solutions to the problems that the survey pointed out. This is so ridiculously pathetic and I am so embarrassed for her and angry that the bar is SO LOW for her. SOOOOO LOOOOOOWW!

      • Cidy says:

        @AmyToo

I agree. I think that her biggest problem with her ideas is lack of focus? I think she finds it hard to focus on just one thing and I think they are rolling out this project in phases to see both how they are received and then how they are going to roll out the next step. I’m not saying it’s not sloppy, and I think her “research” time has been her mostly trying to narrow down what she wants to focus on, not necessarily researching one thing – which would have been more productive.

But yes, the bar is too low for someone who has been in her position for years. It’s ridiculous.

      • Hope says:

If I’m right and Kate does have ADHD, it would amazing if she could represent for that, especially for how it affect mental health.

      • yinyang says:

@Hope I don’t think ADHD, she just likes playing young dumb.

  8. Original Jenns says:

Here’s what I’d respect. If she/the project said something about how so much work has already been done in this area by specialists that truly know the details and have the knowledge, but she wants to work to bring it more attention to people that can do something about it. More parks and exercise? Better meals? Schooling? Just giving children the attention they need as babies??? She wants to network with the powers that be to get it done, not just know about it. I think that is the battle with stuff like this. Actually getting stuff done instead of political talking points and having it die in committee.

That said, I do like her in simple outfits, and I like her hair – as I said before, I like vintage cosplay (I’d totally do it if I were her and you guys would loathe me!), and her hair is always giving me 70s vibes!

    • Robin E Keefe says:

@Original Jenns: Exactly! Just surveying now? Study Montessori and many other early childhood educators over the years. There are decades of research based studies, educational materials and state and community organizations all focused on improving the lives of very young children. Then come to the meetings already prepared to collaborate with parents from a range of socio-economic backgrounds. For the important stuff: Never a proponent of bangs, but one cannot go wrong with a camel-hair coat

  9. bonobochick says:

    the embiggening continues…

  10. Bubbs says:

I’m here for it, I like what she’s doing this time.

    • Kristina says:

      +1

And I really like this outfit! Love the skirt and i love a black, long- sleeved turtleneck. I don’t have a coat like that but I’d like one! I’m actually wearing a gold, round pendant like that one she has. I think she looks great, but then again that’s totally my style . 🙂

  11. Joyce says:

I find the Sussexit saga was it for me. I have been interested and supportive of Monarchy since I was a kid, but apparently Megan and Harry were the last thing that interested me about the Royal Family and now I just do.not.care. Andrew has been taking shady money for “access” for decades and now we know his dirty money is nothing compared to his being a child rapist. Charles is a broken, selfish man and silly man. Will and Kate are too-little-too-late and just too nothing. Phillip has been a sexist curmudgeon since the 1950s and Anne is about as aware of real life and real people as a houseplant.

    I just.do.not.care.

    • minx says:

I’m pretty much at the same point. I still like to look at the fashion, styling, etc. But the whole BRF is ridiculous.

    • carmen says:

Yep. Meghan was the best thing that could have happened to the royal family and they blew it.

    • OriginalRose says:

Yep I agree with this statement. I’ve always been a fan and loved both the recent royal weddings but the last 2 months of nonsense and i’m just not interested anymore.

  12. leigh says:

That side photo is really scary how thin she is. The Daily Mail has a bigger photo–yikes. She’s taking the imitation of Diana a little too far. She looks really really depleted, but don’t blame the recent Sussex drama for that. I do love the top and the skirt, but the first thing I thought when I saw the coat was she was copying Meghan.

So according to Rebecca English, her stop in London today is cancelled due to weather. I’m reading that as too foggy for the helicopter or private plane ride back to the city.

And I think Meghan and Harry will be having a private laugh today over the survey questions.

    • carmen says:

and to think that pleats make you look fuller and add roundness to your shape!

    • yinyang says:

Her head looks detached from her body.

    • Andrea says:

I am glad people are finally talking about the elephant that has been in the room that no one has wanted to discuss. I am a recovered anorexic and I have stated for years that she is alarmingly thin. Look at any pictures of her pre-engagement and she looks markedly different. Yes, she is older, but like Victoria Beckham, she clearly has a very limited caloric intake to look that way. Yes, there are naturally thin women, but she was never this thin before.

I have a dear friend who is 33 who limits her caloric intake because she has body dysmorphic issues. She is 90 lbs and 5’2″and feels she looks fat if she eats more than 200 calories in one setting. She doesn’t eat at parties at all and picks at her food in front of others. I feel at a loss at how to broach the subject with her because I know she can be very defensive, but I also worry about her tremendously. This is an issue I wish we discussed more openly so people could get the proper help for and realize that sometimes it truly is an eating disorder.

      • carmen says:

What I don’t get is how, with Diana’s history, the royals seem oblivious to it or are simply burying their heads in the sand.

It’s been brought up countless times here on this site, but those pointing it out are often shut down by others who either claim she is naturally that thin (I guess they don’t recall how she looked pre-engagement) or use the body shaming argument.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Andrea thank you for saying this. I try not to bossy shame but when you compare her to even her wedding photos she is alarmingly thin. And she lost weight for the wedding. It is worrisome. You seem to be sensitive and caring. I hope your friend is able to get the right help. Congrats on your health accomplishments!

      • Andrea says:

Thank you for the kind words!

  13. Chrissyms says:

I like the look. I actually don’t mind the coat. I am always surprised how tall and lean she looks standing next to regular people. How tall is she ? If anything positive comes out of this royal shit show it’s that Kate will push herself more. She had an amazing platform to do some good and like regularly work. She is such a natural with children. It’s her strong spot

    • puddin says:

I seem to remember that she is 5’10”.

      • MissM says:

She is 5’7″ barefoot and maybe 5’10” in heels. Michelle Obama is 5’10”, Kate was looking up at her despite Michelle wearing kitten heels and Kate being in stilettos when they met. There is a photo of Nicole Kidman towering over Kate when Kate had on those massive Jimmy Choo sandals even though Nicole is only 5’11”.

      • yinyang says:

And Diana towered over Nicole Kidman, probably one of the few woman who did, and Diana wore low heels cause she disliked her height. Kate is probably naturally 5’7″ more with her very tall heels. Still tall but not super tall like those two.

    • Vava says:

      she’s 5’7″ at most.

      • Puddin says:

Nope, Meghan is way under 5’7”. Kate is 5’10. I am 5’7” and she is much taller than I am.

      • Becks1 says:

Kate isn’t 5’10 unless William is super tall. Kate regularly wears 4 inch heels around him and she is never taller than him.

      • Vava says:

She’s taller than you, Puddin, because she wears high heels most of the time. 5’7″ and I’m sticking with my story. Add a three inch heel and sure she’d tower over you.

      • truthSF says:

William is not 6’4″, he’s 6’3″ at most. And Harry is 6’1″. And according to someone who met her, she said Kate was tall, but shorter than she realized. Said she is around 5’8″, 5’8 1/2 with flats.

  14. Florence says:

Looking, er, not so refreshed. Poor Kate, having to work.

  15. carmen says:

I’d love to be a fly on the wall and hear some of the conversations this hard working child advocate has with the experts. Unless she’s reading a teleprompter or has an aide whispering to her, it’s very doubtful she can credibly hold up her end of the conversation.

  16. Becks1 says:

This “launch” would have been fine if it weren’t coming after 16 months of hearing about her mysterious project with lots of promises about how involved she was and how much she was learning etc. If this survey was the first step in the project, I think we would all be more interested/supportive/whatever.

But all the talk about how she has spent 8 years working on this and we have a survey with 5 questions……yeah, its a bad look.

    • ArtHistorian says:

She should emulate the MO of her SIL – only launch a project when it is ready!

This survey smacks of the project not being ready but them feeling like they need to produce something after more than a year of hype.

I don’t think that Kate needs a “Grand Project” to end all problems that can beset children in their early years. I don’t think that she has the vision or the discipline. There’s nothing wrong with her doing what she has done all along – visit institutions and initiatives that need to have their public profile raised.

Kate is no Meghan, CP Mary or Queen Maxima – not everybody can be a power house. It is embarrassing and sad to see KP trying to make her into something she isn’t. She doesn’t need to re-invent the wheel, she doesn’t need to put the projects together herself. It is quite alright if she provides funding and a public profile to great projects that help people.

      • Becks1 says:

@ArtHistorian I completely agree. Not everyone has the vision or drive to complete a “grand project” and that’s okay. I am not creative or visionary so some of these projects/ideas would never occur to me, and that’s okay. I have other strengths.

Kate doesn’t need a big project, and forcing her to have one is embarrassing. She could place a focus on childhood development by the charities she visits, fundraisers, etc. All this hype around it is not doing her any favors.

      • ArtHistorian says:

Raising awareness IS important. Kate could just add more patronages to her portfolio, visit more consistently, work on improving at public speaking – and, what would be really great, gently nudge the RRs into focusing more on the places she visits than on her fashion, encourage to them to interview the leaders of the projects, etc. Be a kind of gentle facilitator between the projects and the public attention that they need.

I think she needs to recognize her strengths and her weaknesses – and then play to her strengths instead of trying to be something that she is not. I think she/KP is trying to compete with Meghan without having Meghan’s drive and ingenuity – and this does Kate no favours.

      • windyriver says:

        @ArtHistorian

I agree re: both Kate, and Will; there’s no need for grand gestures for either one, since neither have the skills or the interest to support an ongoing or long term project. The more traditional royal roles as you discuss above are still valuable though, and more suited to their abilities.

But – remember Kate and the Irish Guards (I think it was) fiasco some years back? When Kate broke a 100+ year tradition by not showing up for an event, because KP didn’t want people to keep expecting to see her? Prior to Meghan coming on the scene, neither Kate nor Will cared much for any kind of work, and got away with it. I’m not convinced this attitude has changed.

As you indicate, Meghan arrived. She and Harry were highlighted for doing significant projects. Jealousy and competition kicks in; suddenly Will and Kate have “initiatives” of their own. They still haven’t really been working though, just making lots of noise while putting together umbrella organizations combining groups with actual credentials. And judging by this survey, Kate is once again “learning” – as she did when learning about textiles a while back. At the event the other evening, they likely got their first taste of “be careful what you wish for”. We’ll see if the current flurry of activity for each of them continues past the next few weeks.

Serious question though – with all the talk about slimming down the monarchy, and the older generation who’ll be retiring – what happens to the hundreds of events these people were doing for so many organizations? Presumably, a royal’s presence was to: 1) be a focus for fundraising; 2) highlight important work; 3) give the public a chance to see/meet a member of the RF.

If in the not too distant future there will be many fewer family members doing many fewer events, so fewer people have the chance to interact with them, what impact will that have on the monarchy as a whole?

        @windyriver

At this point Kate is very much the girl who cried “keen” – and like the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf!, the danger to this approach is that people stop believing in you.

I want to believe the best of Kate but at this point my expectations are very very low. Maybe she’ll surprise us but I don’t hold out much hope anymore – and I find that really sad.

      • Becks1 says:

Oh I forgot about the textiles. LOL.

      • notasugarhere says:

That silly textiles visit may have been her trying to get the Royal Opera House (English National Ballet) patronage from HM/Andrew. She took Charlotte to a behind-the-scenes ballet event that December too. Leaked photos were allowed to stay online to show how much Kate-and-Diana’s-Granddaughter just LOVE ballet. Was she gunning for Diana’s ballet patronage? Instead, HM gave the National Theatre one to Meghan but didn’t give ROH or ENB to Kate.

    • Nic919 says:

Whoever decided to pretend she worked on this for eight years is not doing her any favours Even having this as the result after 16 months is pretty bad.

  17. liriel says:

I appreciate she works and I blame the palace on the survey issue. Kate does what she is told. So several people came up with THIS? Wow. I LOVE her wavy hair, it looks very natural. I’m afraid of future pettiness between Kate & Meghan. It’s a coincidence but Kate’s birthday, then her 24 tour.

    • notasugarhere says:

Royals direct their own work, the royals themselves have said that for years. But Kate has no desire to work, no interest in the world around her. Catherine Quinn tried to come up with something that could be Kate’s signature initiative. This is it. The pathetic ‘something about early childhood and Broken Britain’. Even Quinn gave up after two years and moved on, because she must have seen there is nothing to Kate but wiglets.

      • Becks1 says:

@Nota I remember many of us saying that it was weird that Quinn was leaving. Yes her contract was up, but considering there were so many rumors/leaks about the launch of this initiative – the timing seemed off for Quinn – like if she had been working with Kate on a large project, why not wait to see it through, or at least launched? And she peaced out pretty much as soon as she could. That says a lot, IMO.

    • Nic919 says:

What does this 24 hour tour even mean? She is certainly not working 24 hours straight so does it mean she’s away from KP for 24 hours? Is she going to visit kids for a total of 24 hours? Add that to pretending she worked on this for eight years and there are just so many lies in the PR for this initiative.

    • GuestWho says:

If Kate’s birthday was so important, then she and/or her mother and/or husband shouldn’t have leaked to Dan W. who gave the Sussexes the deadline date for publication of that leak – which so happened to be the day before her birthday. And, btw, she’s not 8. The world doesn’t revolve around her birthday. I don’t actually believe that Meghan was petty with this – she’s just going about her business. If Meghan wanted to be petty, she’s had PLENTY of ammunition and opportunity and she’s not taken it. I think you can believe that any future pettiness is coming from one direction and one direction only. Successful people don’t need to be petty.

      • yinyang says:

Yep. There were times in the media when William said and Kate didn’t say, and both did things alluding to Harry and Meghan to just get on with it. No time, not once did Meghan mention even the slightest inclination of pettiness towards William and Kate. She was mannered in ALL her dealings.

  18. JenJen says:

This outfit is such a knock off of Meg’s outfit from her visit to Canada House before Sussexit. No one else see that?! But I’m sure she will be praised for how modern and elegant she looks…

    • L84Tea says:

That was the first thing I noticed about this outfit. The whole thing head to toe is so very, very Meg.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Lol right? She’s SWFing Meghan big time right now (and I expect we’ll see more of it). The bar is below sea level as usual with Kate.

    • Liz version 700 says:

      Oh yep definitely see it.

  19. Myra says:

Kate….STOP you’re embarrassing your country with this initiative. 5 very broad question that will tell you NOTHING. Landmark Study, does KP understand what a Landmark Study means?

  20. Laura says:

All I keep thinking is in the past, right before she announces she’s pregnant, she does a lot of work. It’s like she’s preloading. Lol if I’m wrong please correct me. Her pregnancies generate so much goodwill and would take attention off her in-laws and the Rose bush drama that still lingers.

    • aria says:

if she announces the pregnancy then it wont be good for princess beatrice because the baby is in direct line of succesion, any news or celebration of any kind. beatrice have to wait a long time. this is what i learn from the crown during prince andrew birth. correct me if im wrong.

      • notasugarhere says:

Kate getting pregnant again has nothing to do with Beatrice. Beatrice isn’t going to inherit the throne, and she isn’t going to have a big televised wedding no matter what.

  21. TheOriginalMia says:

All these months of embiggening her project and we get a 5 question survey to show for it. Wow. And the RRs are salty because Sussex Royal released 2 photos of Meghan’s private visit at the Mayhew. Accusations of overshadowing the FFQand how it’s outrageous. Simmer done, Skippy! If Kate has released something more substantive after 2 years, then a minor royal wouldn’t have been able to step on her news cycle. Enjoy your irrelevancy!

    • Amy Too says:

What I want to know is how come this had to be pushed back multiple times? It’s a 5 question survey. That is literally all it is right now and yet somehow, the launch of this 5 question survey was pushed back over and over again for like 18 months! HOW!? WHY!?

  22. Nikki* says:

Ha, ha, ha. I’ve been a Kate defender on many fronts, but this is simply an absolute embarrassment. How incredibly inept and pathetic. I also appreciated the comments of all those who have a background in this field; y’all were very interesting.

  23. Lisa says:

I like the color combination but as always the substance is missing when Kate launches something. I really expected more after 8 years.

  24. Vava says:

She looks tired and drawn. Her hair looks like a mess, too. Her outfit is MEH. I don’t think that shade of camel is very flattering with her current skin tone, and although it looks well tailored (love the hand stitched lapel), it’s too long and has her usual button theme going on. Hate those boots, so dated. The skirt and turtleneck are boring as hell, just like her.

  25. MeghanNotMarkle says:

*sigh* It finally came and… Whomp whomp. That’s IT?

She does look good, though. I like this style on her. She just needs to do something with that security blanket on her head.

  26. Anne says:

How many coats does this woman have? Every time she steps out she wears a new coat. Coats are not T-shirts. This month only, she wore like what 4 new coats in 10 days of “work” and “appearances” I seriously don’t understand. Even Queen always repeats her coats. Do we now need a new home every time we exit the house? Is this some new thing?

    • Maria says:

I can’t believe how many coats she has. If she is not going to repeat, then give them to charity. It’s a nice look, but a copy of what Meghan for at Canada House.

    • yinyang says:

Ikr, are people actually blind to this! And those coats don’t come cheap!

  27. What. . .now? says:

LOL @ the 5 question survey! Let’s all be real here. You can come with five questions after ONE meeting. 8 years and 5 questions. That’s like one question every other YEAR. This is supposed to be a “Wow Moment”? How can KP not see how utterly and totally ridiculous that is?

She looks so much better when she isn’t Diana cos-playing with her faux-80s style. Clean lines look so much more modern and flattering on her.

  28. ClaireB says:

I usually think Meghan looks nice, if a bit neutral, but I’m not liking Kate’s cosplay of her. I just can’t with the Farrah Fawcett hair and the Nipple Buttons.

    • Liz version 700 says:

I feel like you calling them “nipple buttons” is the most interesting Katie Keen has ever been.

    • Ignoto says:

Looks like a Kate has been rummaging through Meghan’s closet. They need to change the locks on Frogmore Cottage.

  29. kerwood says:

It took her EIGHT YEARS to come up with a 5 question survey? These people are simply shameless I agree with the person above who compared this to Melania Trump’s BeBest initiative, which is a VERY pale imitation of Michelle Obama’s work. Like Mrs. Trump, Keen Katie isn’t interested in working. She’s interested in giving the impression of work.

Keen Katie should be ashamed of herself. But when you’re forced to attend church with your husband’s side piece, you’re pretty much dead to shame.

    • What. . .now? says:

“Keen Katie should be ashamed of herself. But when you’re forced to attend church with your husband’s side piece, you’re pretty much dead to shame.”

I firmly believe that this is part of her karma.
THIS is what you get when you act like a doormat.
THIS is what you get when your part of a smear campaign to oust someone who just wanted to do something good for people.
THIS is what you get for sacrificing yourself for a few shiny baubles and nice house.
THIS is how karma will work for Kate. She will not get it in one fell swoop.
It will be like a cancerous rot that she will be forced to endure with her manic, clench jawed smile–especially when the tabs come for her children as they grow up. Hopefully, she will feel some shame, as she reads as Charlotte, Louis, and George are the subject of some grossly, unfair articles knowing this is the price of her “obedience.”

  30. Cel2495 says:

This is laughable… 8 yrs to come up with 5 questions? Lol!
In another note, her outfit looks cute.

  31. February Pisces says:

She can push Meghan out all she wants, she can have the whole show all to herself, but it isn’t gonna make her a ‘star’, she just doesn’t have ‘it’. I’m sure her 2nd honeymoon period of engagements will probably last 3 weeks tops, before she goes back to her old ways.

  32. yinyang says:

I know older kids aern’t as “cute” and cuddly and sometimes come with issues that make some royals uncomfortable (rolls eyes) , but they are a very underfunded group that need help and encouragement too, maybe we can depend on Meghan to work with them. Love you Meghan!!

  33. Catting says:

    “landmark survey” LMBO.

  34. Eleonor says:

    I love that coat.
    That’s all I have.
