The Most Common Types of Hearing Aids

Behind The Ear hearing aids are designed for people with moderate to severe hearing loss and has a case that rests behind the ear.

Hearing loss is a common problem that can occur from damage to the ears or simply from aging. Luckily, hearing aids were created as a way to help those who suffer from hearing loss. If you are looking into purchasing a hearing aid, here are some of the most common types to help you narrow down which is best for you.

Invisible-In-The-Canal (IIC)

This is one of the more recent and increasingly popular hearing aid options. An IIC hearing aid is designed to fit inside the ear canal in a way that makes it invisible when it is worn. This type is to be taken out on a daily basis in order to keep your ears healthy. It is a popular option because of the fact that it is so discreet. These hearing aids are made for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

In-The-Ear (ITE)

ITE hearing aids are made to fit within the outer ear rather than inside of the ear canal. This means that they are visible, but are available in colors that blend in with the skin. They should also be removed every night and are made for people with mild to severe hearing loss.

Receiver-In-Canal (RIC)

Unlike the other two kinds of hearing aids mentioned before, this hearing aid is a silver color rather than skin tone. The other difference is that the speaker is inside of the ear canal. Instead of the plastic acoustical tube used for other aids, electrical wires are used for this type, reducing any distortion or interference. They are barely visible when inserted and designed for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE)

Of all the hearing aid types, this one is specifically designed only for those who have moderate to severe hearing loss. The hearing aid itself is inside of a case that loops around and rests behind the ear. A clear plastic acoustical tube is used that directly amplifies sound into the earbud.
