Researchers in the U.K have found that “beer goggles” are real—no wonder just about any member of the fairer sex looks like Elsa Pataky after you knock back a few.

To better understand the biology behind beer goggles, watch the video above.

Now, the suprising thing about beer goggles is this: women wear them, too. However, a study suggests that they take them off more quickly than you do.

Researchers had male and female subjects drink a pint and a half of beer. Thirty minutes later, the participants were asked to rate the attractiveness of 20 male and 20 female faces. The researchers found that while both men and women find the faces of the opposite sex 10 percent more attractive after a few drinks, the next day women found the same guy less attractive, while males rated women the same as the night before.

Researchers said while it's true alcoholic beverages provoke a part of the brain that plays an important role in attraction for both sexes, the effects of alcohol consumption on attractiveness ratings last longer for males than females.

So what does this mean for your night moves?

According to sex and relationship expert Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D., successful relationships can emerge from alcohol-fueled meetings—you just have to be careful.

“It’s dangerous, but a lot of people are so inhibited they won’t meet others in another way,” says Schwartz. “It doesn’t mean liquid courage is false. It can be enabling.”

In many cases, your personality can increase your attractiveness to her more than a beer. Schwartz recommends buying her one drink—just enough to set her at ease, then try to win her over with your personality.

Look more attractive to her by holding yourself confidently—no slouching shoulders. Say something thoughtful, complimenting her style, not her rack. Next make her laugh and lightly graze her knee, and watch as your behavior turns you into a Brad Pitt look-a-like quicker than that shot of tequila ever could.
