All of Arizona's pro teams reached .500 this year, none made the playoffs

It was the best of times and it was the worst of times for Arizona sports teams. As first shared on Reddit, in the most recent seasons completed by the state’s four professional sports teams, each team finished at .500 or better (hooray!) but none qualified for postseason play (sad trombone). None of the four cities that won titles in the 2013-14 seasons can boast the +.500 stat for each of it teams, so Phoenix has that going for it, which is nice. A title would probably be nicer.

Since the NFL expanded to 12 playoff teams in 1990, only nine 10-6 teams have ever missed the playoffs (The 11-5 Patriots missed in 2008.)

The irony of complaining about the unfairness of inferior division winners making the playoffs shouldn’t be lost on NFC West fans. The division once sent a 7-9 team to the playoffs. In 2008, the Cardinals made the Super Bowl as a 9-7 division winner.

NBA: Phoenix Suns (48-34)

As For The Win chronicled last week, the Suns became one of the best teams to ever miss the NBA playoffs when their 48 wins weren’t enough to crack the top eight seeds in the Western Conference. Only the 2008 Golden State Warriors had as many wins and failed to qualify for the postseason.

NHL: Phoenix Coyotes (37-30-15, 89 points)

The NHL’s convoluted standings that feature overtime losses make finishing above .500 easier than in other sports. Still, the Coyotes’ 89 points were the second-most of any team sitting out the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. Each of the first three teams listed missed out on the postseason by a single game.

MLB: Arizona Diamondbacks (81-81)

Going .500 in Major League Baseball is never going to get a team into the playoffs (though the 2005 San Diego Padres won the NL West with an 82-80 record). While not worthy of the playoffs, Arizona’s 81-81 record was still in the top half of the National League.
