NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

AT+T and the The Chernin Group hinted at a joint venture to acquire, invest and launch various OTT video services with more than $500 million. As part of the deal, TCG is contributing VOD Asian programming service Crunchyroll. "Consumers are increasingly viewing video content on their phones, tablets, computers, game consoles, and connected TVs on mobile and broadband networks. AT&T’s massive reach on those platforms across mobile and broadband and their commitment to the online video space make them the perfect fit for this venture with us," Chairman and CEO of TCG Peter Chernin said.

Maker Studios and NYLON are teaming up to release the MCN’s first scripted drama series Oh, You Pretty Things! The ten-episode series will feature Francesca Eastwood following twenty-something trendsetters looking to make a big break in the fashion and music industry in LA. The show will debut on May 19 on Maker’s fashion and beauty network The Platform, NYLON TV and Maker music channels. Select content will also premiere on NylonMag.com along with a soundtrack available on iTunes on May 27.

Conde Nast Entertainment is premiering a slate of new programming across Vogue, Allure, Teen Vogue and Style.com this week. Vogue will premiere behind-the-scenes series Vogue in Motion, Allure will debut weekly series Beauty Evolution, Teen Vogue will spotlight designers at global company Mima-te in Global Threads and Style.com will feature two new series with In the Mood for…with Man Repeller and Beauty Icons. The lineup will be available on each of the brand’s channel pages, YouTube channels and across CNE’s syndication network.

Netflix is planning to raise its subscription service rate for new members by $1 or $2 a month from the standard $7.99 a month. The price hike is a result after Netflix tested the new expense model in Oreland with little impact on subscriber numbers, according to a statement made about its Q1 report. Netflix reported it added 2.25 million new customers, and $53 million in earnings.

CONTENT MEDIA

The Supreme Court indicated little of which way it would rule in the Aereo vs. broadcasters case that started yesterday. The Verge reports the court discussed the outcome of the ruling on cloud computing (like Google music or Dropbox), if Aereo is transmitting the TV signals or just providing the tools to do so and if the company’s antennas are infringing on copyright law. The court also mulled if Aereo was like a cable company, and neither side seemed to argue against this reasoning. The court will likely make a ruling in June.

ADVERTISING

Content & Co and Subway launched the third season of its program The 4 to 9ers in the Hulu spotlight series yesterday. Season three, called The Day Crew, includes five eight-minute episodes featuring Emmy award winner Doris Roberts, and produced and directed by Two and a Half Men director Jamie Widdoes.

AD PLATFORMS

Tubular launched a new solution Tubular Intelligence for its Tubular Audience Dashboard product, along with a $11 million financing for the company led by Canaan Partners. Tubular Intelligence helps brands like Seventeen Magazine, Vice, Maker Studios gain insights from 150 million video fans on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

MediaMath is now offering its TerminalOne Marketing Operating System users access to inventory from video marketplace partners LiveRail, BrightRoll, Adap.tv, DoubleClick Ad Exchange, SpotXchange and more. "Programmatic video advertising is poised for tremendous growth over the next few years," MediaMath’s Co-Founder and SVP of OPEN Partnerships Greg Williams said. "By expanding our video partnerships, we enable our customers to take advantage of the best of the ecosystem to amplify their video advertising performance, while also strengthening their ability to leverage a single, omni-channel platform to communicate with consumers across multiple touch points."

BrightLine announced their advertiser and publisher clients can now use research from ad measurement company Millward Brown Digital. The collaboration will bring Millward’s AdIndex to measure ads on BrightLine’s UXTV connected TV ad products. "Today, brands can easily publish video to entertain audiences or inform potential customers" FirstMark Capital‘s Founder and Managing Director Rick Heitzmann said. "Content marketing in particular is exploding, and the single most powerful form of content has always been video – sight, sound and motion."

Media agency Media Storm has signed on video ad solution company Eyeview to create customized audience campaigns for its cable and network TV clients. The audience analysis will help TV brands identify tune-in trends (geo-location, data and audience type) for different genres.

TECHNOLOGY

Time Warner Cable will soon be promoting a new set-top-box from start-up company Fanhattan, called Fan TV, and available for $99 starting in June. Variety reports TWC subscribers can access TV and VOD from the provider, and other services like Redbox Instant by Verizon, Crackle, Target Ticket and music streaming site Rhapsody. The move from TWC is a way to expand the service through more platforms and give customers more options, according to the company’s SVP and General Manager of Video Mike Angus.

EXEC MOVES

Yahoo hired Susan Kittenplan as Executive Editor of Media Initiatives. She was recently Executive Editor of Allure Magazine, and is the founder of Kittenplan Catalyst LLC.

Yieldex has named Tom Quinn as General Manager of YieldexDirect for Advertisers. Quinn most recently served as Chief Revenue Officer of Merkle’s Digital Services.

Search technology company Conductor appointed Director of Research Nathan Safran to the Board of Directors at SEMPO. SEMPO is the largest nonprofit trade organization in the world for the search and digital marketing industry.

Shazam hired Lauren Zalaznick on to its board of executives. She was most recently an exec at NBCUniversal.
