Avril Lavigne has combined the sexy and downright bizarre in her video for Hello Kitty.

The former skater rocker's new single continues her move towards all things poptastic as she releases her latest cheesy single.

The catchy - but some might say irritating - song has divided critics and fans, although it's impossible to deny her Japanese-inspired video is ridiculously fun.

Her faux-rapping vocals include the lyrics "Like a fat kid on a pack of Smarties" which may or may not amuse some...

Avril's cupcake skirt and sexy black top is a stark contrast to the rest of the colourful clip as she's flanked by purple-haired Japanese girls dressed in blue shorts, white tops and pink tights and braces.

Critics have been quick to blast the track and its bizarre video, with Billboard describing it as an "embarrassment", with a video "even more abhorrent than the song". Ouch!

Meanwhile, E! News pined for a Complicated era of ties and punk rock, describing the song as "unfortunate" and insisting while Avril looks great - which she does - it's not enough to save her here.

However, the Girlfriend singer - whose husband Chad Kroeger co-wrote the song - will be glad that her fans have reacted positively to the single.

One tweeted: "#HelloKittyMusicVideo is so awesome!!!"

"@AvrilLavigne congratulations for #HelloKittyMusicVideo. It's so funny! I had a smile on the time!!! (sic)," wrote another.
